Vintage Chinese Ming

Porcelain, is today, so widely available and is such an every day commodity, that we could very easily overlook just how different it was.

The West was introduced to oriental porcelain as early as the mid 15th century, when precious examples appeared in Lisbon, Portugal being the first to acquire trading rights from Imperial China.

Prior to this, porcelain, both Chinese and Japanese, was seen in Europe as a mystical substance, with almost, magical properties, from a place that very few knew of, let alone, had been to. Most information was still based on the visit made by Marco Polo in 1275.

One anecdotal story we have involves the last will and testament left by Queen Elizabeth the 1st, who died in 1603. Listed among the Queens personal effects was a little Chinese porcelain tea bowl, no doubt produced during the Ming dynasty, probably around 1550.

This precious object, was not only considered as rare and valuable, but having magical, if not, life saving properties! It was commonly believed that this mysterious little bowl from the "Middle Kingdom" would turn black, should it come into contact with poison! This story had arrived in England from the Italian Medici court, where poison was a very real threat to the ruling family!

The secret mystery of porcelain production remained a secret until 1704 when it was rediscovered in the Electoral state of Saxony (now northern Germany) under the patronage of Augustus, elector of Saxony and King of Poland.

Augustus was a fanatical collector of Japanese porcelain in particular and would go to extreme lengths to acquire pieces for his collection; with much of his outstanding collection can still be seen today.

From these early 18th century beginnings, porcelain from China and Japan began to arrive in Europe. The appeal of the market was immediate, and Oriental porcelain became the rage. It is worth recalling that we still call porcelain "China", because, that's where it came from!

Ceramics, per se, are top of the list in being a surviving visual gauge of social change throughout history. From mans prehistoric history, it is usually, shards, or, broken pieces of low fired pottery which remain to give us a revealing insight into the lives of men and women as far back as it is possible to go.

Since the Saxon development of porcelain over 300 years ago, innumerable changes have taken place throughout society, particularly in standards of living. It is now, of course, possible for everyone to buy porcelain for everyday use, from very expensive to very inexpensive.

One of the leading qualities of antique porcelain at our time of history is the ability to reconnect with our past through our antique acquisitions, which not only enrich our interiors, but further enrich our lives.

SELLERS & BUYERS WANTED

Virtual Boutiques Mall Shops (VBMShops) is a “street of shops” and was started with four things in mind... the first is to be the First and Only Online Auction Boutique Mall for Antique, Vintage and New merchandise and goods... two, is to be the lowest fees of any site on the internet. Three is to put the VBMShop member first and foremost by offering premier customer service, equal feedback and more and finally four is to provide an opportunity for all non profits at no cost to increase their available operating capital.

For the next 60 days you can sell as many items as you wish with all of the bells and whistles you desire for nothing, nada, nil… and this is just for you to try us out. We hope that you will find that the VBMShop concept is more fitting to how you buy and sell and that our policies and prices are fairer than any other auction or non-auction venue on the internet.

VBMShops will be opening 30+ specialty shop boutiques over the next few months. Each will have the look and feel of the merchandise. Each shop will have a “shopkeeper” who will be an expert in most of the merchandise being sold on the site. The shopkeeper can advise the sellers and buyers on trends, good buys and basically share their special expertise.

Currently we have three boutiques open and ready for sellers and buyers.

The first is Vintage Gems Emporium where you will find it easy to sell or buy your antique, vintage and new costume and fine jewelry in either an auction and/or a fixed price venue. It is here where you will find designer signed jewelry from the 1960’s or fabulous and sparkly rhinestones for the upcoming prom season. All in all there are over 250 categories and subcategories to shop or sell in. Gabrielle is the shopkeeper for the Gems Site. Gabrielle’s extensive experience in collecting and selling antique and vintage costume jewelry has prepared her to assist you on your “exciting gems journey”. She will be contributing fun recounts of her own experiences and will predict upcoming trends to look out for. She will also seek the expertise of other jewelry addicts to share their stories with the VBMShops family. The hope is that Gabrielle can give you the confidence needed to create a successful business on VBMShops.

The second fabulous boutique is Just 4 Collectibles. This boutique is like a great flea market and features vintage and newer merchandise that appeals to the all round collector who just loves things. This boutique  will feature snowglobes, figurines, comic books, militaria, and more, Just 4 Collectibles has over 300 categories in which to choose to sell that Star Wars or Barbie Doll collection you have been holding onto. Jacquie is the collectibles shopkeeper. Jacquie has owned a collectibles shop for the past 15 years. She knows what is hot and what is not and will share these insights with all who are interested.

The third and I think one of the most exciting boutiques is Arts Antiques Galleria. This boutique is like a high end arts and antique shop where you can sell and buy original and reproduction artworks by famous artists, antiquities, furniture and other great antique finds. There are again over 250 categories and subcategories to sell and shop in. Nancy Romness is the shop’s resident artist. Nancy works in numerous mediums and can be commissioned to paint your child, your pet or your home. Her landscapes are breathtaking and her artwork is unique and identifiable. The boutique’s shopkeeper is Clive. Clive is from Dublin Ireland and comes from a long line of art and antique afficionados. His great uncle, Sir Richard was sculptor to England’s Queen Victoria. Sir Richard reached such acclaim that when he died in 1856 he was buried in Westminister Abbey. Clive had owned and operated his own fine antiques shop in London until 1995 and is now retired and ready to write his memoirs. As the arts antiques shopkeeper, his articles will enlighten and regale even the most experienced arts and antiques lover and discernible collector.

The next boutiques to be opened within the next couple weeks will be Vintage Clothing & Accessories, New and Used Clothing and Accessories, Sporting Goods, Sports Memorabilia and Home and Garden.

More boutiques to come will include Stamps and Coins, Books and Ephemera, Antique and Vintage Motor Vehicles, Toys and Hobbies, Ethnic Boutique, The Capitals of the World Boutique, The Luxury and One of a Kind Boutique, Baby and Toddler, Bed and Bath, Beauty & Health, Bridal, Electronics, Kitchen Gourmet and so much more.

About the Author

I have had a fabulous life so far. For the first 40 years of my life I worked all around the world doing massive retail design projects. I have met almost every living fashion designer and architect out there. Throughout my travels I collected everything interesting that I could find and thus have an incredible assortment of fine and rare antiques, art and signed and rare jewelry. Most recently over the past 15 years I have become entrenched in the eBay phenom and as a result have started my own auction venue at www.VBMShops.com. What makes this site different is that VBMShops is comprised of specialty shop boutiques all in an auction and fixed price venue. These sites not only look great but are easy to use... sort of the "body and bones" of eBay but the "heart and soul" of a fine boutique found in any of the world capitals. Come see us and SELL & BUY to your hearts content.
