Needing information about a old sword cane?
This walking sword cane has a steel blade that has some very faint gun bluing scrolls on it. It has a presentation handle made of horn or tortoise shell. I thought it was Bakelite until I did the heat test and it smelled very much like burnt hair. It has very small gold stars which circles the handle in a vertical patterns of three then two repeating and meeting a shield type coat of arms shape made of brass in the front. The rim is of a nice hammered nickel silver with a chevron pattern. The Scabbard is made of some type of thin light colored wood (almost like bamboo but it’s not) and the tip of the Scabbard is made of thin steel. I would guess the age of this cane / walking stick to be around the mid 1800 by the workmanship. The only markings are 008 on the nickle silver of the handle and a four digit number on the metal rim of the scabbard both of which I'm pretty sure was individually stamped.
If any one is knowledgeable about this item I would appreciate any help with it.
Hi, I have some info regarding your sword cane. The wood case is Shisham wood, a lite weight. Very few were made with bamboo.The company that made it is located in Delhi, India.
I had the same style of sword cane during the 80's. When i taught a martial art based on it. The pattern of stars is based on the union jack. The burning smell test indicates its made of horn or ivory.
The low number on the plate indicates you've got an early model!!!! The blades are valuable and were manufactured almost custom style. The scabbard was made as a replacement part & were made in the thousands.
The chevron indicates it was carried by military officer, usually. (Mine wasnt, it had a lions head, and was carried by a sikh body guard).
On the mid 1800's, good guess. 1850 & 60 were the start of them. No british gentleman or lady would venture out at night without one. Hold onto that cane!!!!!!!!!
