The first and main reason the iPod Touch is so breakable is due to the user demand for a very sleek lightweight music device that boasts a screen large enough to play videos or movies. In order to do this, the team of engineers on Apples think lab had to come up with a thin lightweight shell. In designing this shell, the engineers used a very pliable aluminum/steel based metal that was just big enough to fit the internal contents of the device. The other reason this device is so breakable is due to its lack of distance between the screen and the outer edge. In many cases, it is very difficult to drop this device without hitting the screen. Once the screen meets a hard surface, the sheer force that is applied to the glass component immediately shatters it, leaving the user with a cracked screen. The device is clearly designed for functionality, not durability. If apple wanted to remedy this situation they could design a thicker glass/plexy component or they could increase the strength of the metal used, perhaps even use carbon fiber.
