Khlongs of Thornburi – A Journey in to a Hidden Treasure in Bangkok

The Khlongs of Thornburi refer to canals that run through the Thornburi area, which at one time was the capital of Bangkok in the era of King Taksin. Now Thornburi forms a part of Bangkok, and lies on the western side of the city beginning from the Chao Phraya River. The canals in Thornburi are filled with many boats that can be hired by tourists wishing to explore this unique area by water. An exploration trip along these Khlongs are bound to take you to a completely different world from Bangkok’s everyday hustle and bustle.

The long tailed boats that run along these canals make for a pretty sight with its vibrant colours. Much of the Khlongs are surrounded by beautiful lush greenery, whilst there are also many ‘floating markets’ located along the canals, providing a unique setting. A boat can be hired from the Tha Chang pier close to Grand Palace or from the River City Shopping complex pier. Upon hiring a boat, tourists should visit places such as the Klong Bangkok Noi, the Khlong Mon, the Klong Bangkok Yai and the Royal Barges Museum.

The Klong Mon is quaint in its atmosphere as there are many houses with a dock found here, and a lot of natural plant life and greenery. Within the range of townhouses and weathered old homes, an odd temple can be located in the criss-cross of canals. The Klong Bangkok Noi is much more exciting as you get the feel you are boating along a river rather than a canal. These wider canals are lined with many temples, navy sites and more homes. Many of the people staying along these canals, depend on the boats as a means of transport.

There are several interesting temples that are worth a stop over during your journey along the Khlongs of Thornburi. One of which is the Temple of Dawn. The Royal Barges Museum is also a must see. Housed in large shed, this colourful museum displays barges that were once used in formal events such as Royal ceremonies. Up close you will be able to admire the fine artwork and gilding that cover these barges.

A visit to Bangkok would not be complete without viewing this hidden and beautiful side of the city. Tourists looking to explore the city from a Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel should consider staying at the Bangkok Grand President. This complex lies in a prime spot in the hub of the city’s entertainment, commercial and shopping areas, and provides elegant Bangkok serviced apartments to relax in.

I am planning to visit udaipur, i have heard alot about the lake palace.?

I am a foodie, i wanted to know about the dinning options at the lake palace. I have also heard about their pontoon and royal barge dinning. Any suggestions on the same?..
Thank u!

The a la carte lunch costs around Rs 2000, and a four course dinner around Rs 3000, though the buffet is a bit less. It is recommended that you book your reservations at least a day in advance.

To book dining on the pontoon or barge, I believe you need to be a guest at the hotel. Contact the concierge service directly to make arrangements.

If you haven't already looked at it, here is the information about dining at the Lake Palace, from the Taj Hotels website:

Some alternatives in Udaipur I would recommend as a fellow foodie:

For a less-expensive option, but still a good meal in a lovely setting, the restaurant on the rooftop terrace of the Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel.

For more gourmet-style dishes and an elegant environment, the patio restaurant at the Oberoi Udaivillas is excellent. When we dined there, they had a very talented but unobtrusive collection of traditional musicians playing, and the food is no less than you would expect from the Oberoi. We preceded our dinner with an amazing private sunset lake cruise in one of the hotel's traditional kashmiri boats.

Study lists schemes to boost canals
Facilities for houseboats; horse-drawn barges; markets; concerts; water sports, shops and restaurants are proposed for the Royal and Grand canals in Dublin in a new report from Waterways Ireland.

Thanks for visiting!
