With so many different dog breeds, how can you know which one is right for you? There are so many things to take into consideration: size, behavior, health concerns, temperament and grooming requirements. Here we have outlined a few popular dog breeds to help you find the dog that is best for you and your family.

Standard Poodle

The Standard Poodle is the largest of the Poodle breeds. It stands between 22 and 27 inches tall and typically weighs between 45 and 70 pounds. They are a lively dog that can be used for hunting or as a family pet. If cared for properly and given the right nutrition they typically will live between 10 and 13 years. If bred, you can expect them to deliver between 3 and 8 pups at a time.

Border Collie

The Border Collie is a British herding dog. This breed was created by crossing the Harlequin, the Bearded Collie, the Smithfield and the Bob-tailed Shepherd. This is a medium sized dog that doesn't get much bigger than 21 inches. Its weight ranges between 30 and 44 pounds. The Border Collie has a long fluffy coat that is predominantly black with white marking on the muzzle, neck, chest, and underbelly.

To care for this breed you will need to brush their coat on a daily basis. Bathing should also be done on a semi-regular basis or as needed. Because of the thickness of their coat it is important to check their coat regularly for ticks and other parasites. The herding nature and high prey drive of this dog breed makes it imperative to keep it active and entertained. Some activities that this dog likes include agility competitions, herding, running, and chasing. Some of the health problems that you will want to watch out for include: joint problems, progressive retinal atrophy, and ceriod lipofuscinosis.

Tibetan Terrier

The Tibetan Terrier, also called the Dhokhi Apso, is a non-sporting breed that originated in Tibet. They are a natural breed that developed characteristics and features needed to survive in the harsh climate of the Himalayas. They are a small to medium sized dog that stands between 14 and 16 inches tall and they weigh between 18 to 30 pounds. They have a long fluffy coat that comes in a variety of colors. They are a friendly breed that can get along with kids and other pets as long as they have been raised with them or properly socialized and trained.

English Setter

The English Setter, also referred to as a Laerack Setter, is an English breed. It is one of the oldest gun dog breeds in the world. This breed was developed by crossing pointers with Spanish spaniels.

This breed typically stands between 24 and 27 inches tall and it usually weighs between 56 and 66 pounds. Their coat is short and dense, except on their underbody, legs, and tail where they have feathering. They come in a variety of color combinations including, liver and white, black and white, lemon and white, orange and white, and tricolor. This is a relatively healthy breed. The only thing that you need to watch out for is hip dysplasia.

West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland White Terrier, also called the Poltalloch Terrier, is a Scottish terrier breed. They were originally developed as vermin hunters. Today this breed is a popular family pet.

The West Highland White Terrier is a small dog that stands between 10 and 11 inches tall and it weighs between 15 and 22 pounds. They have a double coat that consists of a wiry outer coat and a soft undercoat. This breed is always white. The West Highland White Terrier is fun and friendly. They are also a fairly hardy dog that can withstand rough housing. This combination of characteristics makes them an excellent companion for kids.

Brittany

The Brittany, also referred to as the Epagneul Breton and the Brittany Spaniel, is a French breed that can be dated back to nearly 150 A.D. They are a medium sized dog that stands between 17.5 and 20.5 inches tall and weighs between 30 and 40 pounds. They have a medium length coat that is dense and wavy and that has fringing on their legs. They come in several color combinations including roan, tri-colored patterns, orange and white, and liver and white.

This breed needs a lot of attention to stay happy and out of trouble. Because of this you will need to exercise your Brittany at least once a day. You may also want to provide it with a playmate if you spend a lot of time away from your home. To care for its coat you will want to brush it twice a week. Their toenails grow fast so you will want to trim them weekly. They can have sensitive feet and may be resistant to trimmings. To help reduce this sensitivity you will want to train your Brittany from a puppy to be still and quiet while having their feet handled.

Komondor

The Komondor is a Hungarian breed that was used to guard sheep flocks from predators. This breed can be traced back to at least 1555. It most likely descended from Russian herding dogs. Today this exotic looking dog is used mostly as a working dog.

The Komondor is a large working dog that stands between 26 and 32 inches tall and weighs between 80 and 135 pounds. Their white coat is long and dreaded. This is a fairly rare breed that can often be mistaken for a mutt that has not been properly groomed. However, this ragged look is what is natural to this breed. To care for this unique breed's coat you should never brush its hair. Instead gently separate the hair into cords as its gets longer. If you are new to this breed then you may want to have a professional groomer do this for you, or at least have them show you what to do.

Tibetan Terrier Puppy And Dog Information

The Tibetan Terrier can be kept in an apartment as long as she can get frequent walks. This is a very active dog when outside. A properly fenced in exercise area would be ideal. She can be a barker so keep this in mind. She can do well with other dogs and pets but needs to be extensively socialized with them when young. Older, calm children are good, again, socialization early on would help. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog. It also should be kept in mind that these dogs are said to bring good luck.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Tibetan Terrier is 14 to 16 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 18 to 30 pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Tibetan Terrier is no exception. Although considered a healthy breed, be on the look out for flea allergies, eye disease and eye irritation from hair and Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness). This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

*Grooming. The Tibetan Terrier has a double coat. The under coat is wooly and soft. The outer coat is long and profuse. She should be brushed regularly and it is said that she should be brushed while slightly dampened. Weekly baths are also recommended by some. She should definitely see a professional groomer occasionally.

Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.

*Life Span. The Tibetan Terrier can live between 12 and 15 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

*History. The Tibetan Terrier comes from the remote Himalayas in Tibet. These dogs were kept as pets and considered lucky. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1973.
