In my many years of grooming and caring for peoples wonderful dogs I have yet to see a breed who is more full of personality than the Shih-tzu. Shih-tzu's are top on my list of great companion dogs. If you are looking for lots of company this is your kind of dog. They are energetic & playful. They are very vocal & Shih-Tzu's have no problem actually telling you when they want something or when they don't want something. They do this by mumbling grumbling & barking. It is almost as if they are talking to you or yelling at you for that matter. Luckily their bark is not very ear piercing. Although, their bark is by far louder than their bite.

In fact I have found it very rare to have a biting Shih-Tzu. Shih-tzu's are very intelligent & I have known many to outsmart their owners in the department of becoming very spoiled. If you allow them to do something once you should expect it to become routine. They will demand it !! They are like precious little babies & have a very easy time getting things over on their mommies & daddies. Because they are much like children, a well taught Shih-Tzu is very well behaved, eager to please and oh so full of personality. They are just so sweet.

The Shih-Tzu's History

The Shih-tzu may have existed as early as the sixth century. Many believe this because of paintings that were found of dogs that looked like small lions. It is believed over the years that the Shih-Tzu has been a favorite of royalty, being palace dogs. Around the mid 17th century there were dogs brought from Tibet to the Chinese court. These dogs were bred in the forbidden city of Peking. In 1930 the smallest of these Tibetan holy dogs were brought to England. The result is what we know today as our loving Shih-Tzu, meaning lion.

The Shih-Tzu's Appearance

Shih-Tzu's are part of the toy group of dogs. Ideally, a Shih-Tzu's height should be 9 to 10 1/2 inches. The weight of your full grown Shih-Tzu should range anywhere from 9 to 16 pounds. A good quality shih-tzu should have legs well proportioned to its body, not to long or not to short and its tail should curl over its body. They come in a large variety of different colors and are usually multi-colored. Although if you are not looking to show your Shih-Tzu, I have met many very nice Shih-Tzu's who are not to standard.

Grooming Shih-Tzu's

A Shih-Tzu's grooming needs are unquestionably very demanding. A well bred Shih-Tzu will have an extremely thick coat & if kept long it will matt very easily so it is necessarily to properly brush a Shih-Tzu daily. Not to mention, Shih-tzu's are known for their pug type nose. This brings the nose eyes and mouth together in one small very hairy area. If you do not keep this area clean from tearing, nose droppings and drool it can become a smelly, crusty mess.

On top of daily maintenance, most Shih-Tzu owners find it very convenient to develop a relationship with a good dog groomer to help them maintain their Shih-Tzu's coat, nails & ears. Your Shih-Tzu will need to visit a groomer regularly. Most people get their Shih-Tzu's to the groomer every week to eight weeks depending on the length they keep their coats. Some people find it more convenient to keep their Shih-Tzu's cut short. Either way they are as adorable & as sweet as can be.

Asia Travel : China's Qinghai-tibet Railroad Touches the Skies

Tibetan mountain ranges and landscapes are home to an immense diversity of species of rare plants and birds. Tibetan forests are also famous for its tremendous spectrum of herbs for Chinese medicines. But due to the freezing temperatures and geographical altitudes, China's tourist access to Tibet region has been very limited until recently. On July 1, 2006 Qinghai-Tibet Railroad commenced its passenger service, marking a remarkable milestone in China's infrastructure building. This opens up a way for adventurous tourists to travel from Beijing to the remote Tibet by train with a low budget.
An estimated 90% of tourists would use the railroad to reach Lhasa, Tibet. It is an unique ground expedition across clear cascading streams, spectacular mountain ranges, and the colorful landscapes almost untouched by modern civilization. It would be the dream of urban travelers to experience nature with such a panoramic vision, indulging and rejuvenating for a true getaway from the hectic city-life.
A Centennial Dream Comes True
From its initial conception in the early 1950s, the construction of Qinghai-Tibet Railroad went through a lengthy 50 years to build. The first section of 814 km, from Xining, capital of Qinghai Province, to Golmud began operation in 1984. The Golmud-Lhasa section commenced construction in June 2001. On July 1, 2006, the 1,956-Km Qinghai-Tibet Railroad started its full-length operation. Its 2 inaugural trains, "Qing 1" and "Tibet 2", started service from Golmud and Lhasa separately. China President Hu Jintao labeled the project as an unbelievable achievement both in China and the World's railway construction. This completed mission also realized a centennial dream of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the pioneer of China's democratic revolution.
The Physical Deterrents
Geographical conditions from Golmod to Lhasa are especially harsh. Perennial icy soil as hard as steel, thick blankets of Winter snow and the high altitudes deterred and slowed down project progress through the many years of site execution. An American, Paul Theroux, prophesized that Kunlun Range was a definite impossible geographical barrier for railroad to get to Lhasa. But the inauguration of Qinghai-Tibet Railroad, now the world's highest railroad terminating in Lhasa, has proven Theroux's prophesy untrue.

Environmental Friendly
Chinese authority responded to international call for environmental friendly and sustainable development. 8% of the total development cost was set aside for conservation of environment. Recommendations by the Academy of Environment Protection were taken seriously by the Chinese government before construction. Isn't Holiness Dalai Lama's Non Violent agenda diluted among young tibetan's??

Most probably Young Tibetans are now frustrated & that's why they took violent way to demonstrate their protest against China.
But Dalai Lama always told :"Our protest must be non violent , since we have truth."
In a very rare interview, once upon a time I ask holiness :"If you die out side autonomus Tibet? then what 's reaction? I simply surprised by holiness reply .
Dalai Lama told that when he was in China's prison & chinese government tortured him, his mind certainly ask him ;"Haven't I (Holiness) loss my compassion on them ~who tortured me.

Probably but I think Tibetans in general of all ages are very peaceful in general. If you heard about the story of this Nazi mountaineer who went to Tibet 7 years and read his diary, he says that Tibetans are the most peace loving people on earth. They wouldnt even build new infrastructure because they were scare when building to kill the worms in the ground.

The Joy of Finding one's Roots in a Foreign Country!
A year ago I went to meet the eminent Tibet historian Prof. Eliot Sperling, who teaches at the Indiana University in US, at a coffee shop in the streets of McleodGanj, Dharamsala. The meeting took place just a few days before I was to leave for the US to study English literature.
