If you have loved looking at an antique locket through a shop window pane but have been afraid to buy it due to several myths surrounding them then you need to dump those myths and buy that gleaming piece of history. Here are a few myths about these antique ornaments including gold lockets that have been busted so that you can lay your hands on your dream piece.
This miniature photo frame that can house photos or engraved initials might be extremely costly. This is not the case in all antique lockets. In case you are interested in a gold locket then prices of gold have risen steadily over the years and thus it would be natural to look at high prices in case of a rare one. However, you would certainly be receiving an exclusive golden pendant with a rich history in return. If you have any doubts on the price or genuineness of an antique piece then you can always get it appraised by an expert before you buy it.
A genuine antique locket might be in bad shape. Again, this myth could be unfounded if it was maintained and stored carefully over the years. If you are interested in one made out of gold then you should look for dark patches or discoloration that could indicate reaction with water or other harmful chemicals. There should be minimum scratches on the piece itself and the hinges and lock too should be in good shape before you buy. You should look around in various jewelry stores and even online ones before you make a choice.
Some antique lockets might have bad history attached to it. Several people think that any such pendant that had brought bad luck to its previous owners could be bad for you too. However, this is just a myth that needs to be discarded if you truly like a particular piece made with intricate craftsmanship. In fact you would be buying a golden piece of history that also comes with its own story, a fact that not many others can boast of. You would certainly be asked about the past history of your antique hinged wonder once you sport it around your neck on a matching gold necklace.
If you cannot afford a genuine antique locket or one that is made of costly 24k gold then you need not worry. There are several manufacturers that make eye-catching pieces with an antique look that gives the impression of being the real deal. You can find new lockets made of gold that sport a Victorian, Roman, Aztec or Indian look for a fraction of the price of a real one. These miniature pieces of wearable art are usually made in 14k or 18k gold, which itself is not such a bad or costly deal. You can browse through such pendants and choose one that takes your senses back in time. In addition to gold, you can also find such pieces made out of brass, copper, and German silver. The price of these wonderful hinged pendants will not take your breath away but their ancient designs will surely do so.
A gold locket that sports an antique look can certainly make people's heads turn towards your neck. However, if you have been avoiding buying an antique locket simply due to the myths attached to it then you should step over these busted myths and listen to your heart so as to buy the pendant of your dreams.

Brass Model Trains - Extremely Unique
For the ultimate collector "Brass Model Trains" may be the perfect choice. These toy model trains are made of solid brass and henceforth have an artistic quality to them. Due to the nature of the material the craftsmanship and uniqueness of the pieces are outstanding. However, there is one slight drawback to the Brass Model Trains, the cost. The old saying "you get what you pay for" is not only fact but also the standard. Brass Model Trains are the "Gold" standard of toy model trains. Prices for these trains range upward to $2000 or more and raises the question of are these trains worth collecting. You are about to find out!
It is hard to say what is more important to a collector, appearance or resale value. Brass Model Trains have both. The quality of material, intricate detailing and overall appearance of these models gives the owner pride in the quality of their collection. Some trains in their natural color almost look as if they were made out of gold and that in turn keeps their resale value extremely high. Due to the craftsmanship, look and cost of these toy model trains they are unique within a unique market. The model train collection market is a small niche but to be a niche within a niche makes the Brass Model Trains extremely rare and unique. Collectors like that aspect. The downside of collecting these unique trains is the cost. They can run more than twice the price of a standard composition train. If a collector wants a vintage brass model train he will pay even more than that since they are extremely rare.
Before you begin delving into these beautiful specimens consider the most important element of collecting brass model trains. Think about brass and how time and weather affects it. Now consider the value of your collection and the time and effort that it will require to properly clean, polish and protect your investment. If for some reason you are not able to give your collection enough care it will begin to turn black and on the other extreme, too much polishing will damage the collection. Caring for these pieces of art is a full time endeavor and requires a lot of work.
For many toy model trains enthusiast realism is the key to their entire collection. To the best of my knowledge there has never been a working locomotive that was made out of brass. So as interesting, valuable and decorative as these pieces are they are not typical of a working train and therefore not realistic. What you may want to consider is adding a piece or two of brass model trains to your collection as basically pieces of art to be showcased in you office or home while using a more traditional approach to you toy model train collection. Of course this really depend on what your purpose in collecting the trains is all about. Many collectors like to purchase sets and pieces that never leave the box and are displayed and traded like commodities while other are more like me in that they prefer to build lavish model train scenery layouts that consist of cities, switching yards, trains stations, mountain, etc. Brass Model Trains are very unique and it really depends on the collector's personality and intentions of whether these models will be a good fit. To each his own, as they say.
By the way, I own one and it is proudly displayed in my office!

I need help with determining the value of an old, and possibly rare, slide rule.?
The slide rule is a K&E model 4075 with the additional trig slide. It is in very good condition. The cursor is brass with three pointers in both directions on one side and two on the opposite side. It is in the original cardboard box, but it appears to be missing the top. The rule slides easily and the numbers are very readable.
Google, there are sites for slide rule collectors
