Is there a product that safely removes ice from wood decks?
My mother and grandmother share a joint backyard wood deck. In the winter it naturally accumulates ice patches. We have been looking for a product, such as sidewalk salt that can be put down in order to help melt the ice, to not only make walking safer, but the ice removal easier?
Is there a product out there that can safely remove the ice? I'm figuring ordinary sidewalk salt, or the chemical varieties would damage the wood somehow.
I've read that you can put down kitty litter for traction, but I was looking for something that would actually help to melt the ice.
Any ideas?
I'm assuming that this is an actual wood deck that is treated with a sealer every year, not a wood/plastic composite deck that just about nothing can hurt.
Anything that can melt ice will damage the wood in some way for everything that won't freeze is slightly reactive. Most products won't produce much damage at all. But time would tell eventually.
The best solution I can think of is have a carpenter design and install a radiant heat snow melt onto the underside of the deck. The area would have to be fairly shielded from the winds, or low to the ground or it would be a futile effort. Then they could just flip a switch, and the boards would be heated to 40 or 50 degrees for a couple hours. This is done with cement walkways fairly often, but there is no reason it couldn't be done with a deck. It would just be applied in a different fashion.
