Summer's the best time to gather friends and family, hold a cook-off, lounge in pool sides or simply hold parties. The summer season has a happy, carefree feel to it and what better way to share stories of work and play than this time of year?
Holding outdoor dinners in the summer is a wonderful way to liven up the season and catch up with friends but what if summer is not quite around the corner yet and you would like to bring that light-hearted, easygoing feel of the summer to a dinner party? Here are a few simple ideas to bring a summery feel into an outdoor dinner.
Themes are always great even with small parties among a few friends, so choosing one could really help focus your decorating ideas. Since summer's associated with barbecues, iced drinks and the beach, a cocktail theme, country or beach theme are some of the themes you can use for an outdoor summery dinner.
Summer is all about brightness and color so you would like to put as much of that vibrancy into the dining area, which could be a poolside, backyard, deck or patio. Hang round paper lanterns in bright colors like orange, green, blue and yellow as décors. Greener alternatives like flower pots and bonsai trees when placed in the right areas will give a dinner area a cool, summer feel. Add a canopy or wooden parasol for an intimate feel.
A long table is usually called for in outdoor dinners. Spruce up tables in cloths with hints of floral patterns or leaves. A gingham pattern would work well with a table runner in solid color. Consider seating arrangements too and add pillows that match your table cloth.
A summery feel for an outdoor dinner will best be executed in a well-decorated table setting. Take a large glass container and add floating flip flop candles for a delightful centerpiece and luminaries, perfect for parties that run until the evening. Match them with flip flop coasters in colorful stripes.
Another great centerpiece idea is a set of mint julep cups. Apart from serving mint juleps in these, mint julep cups, the decorative ones, can be used to serve sweet treats too like colorful jelly beans or cookies shaped in beach items or flip flops even. For more formal settings, fill the mint julep cups with flowers and gather a set of three or four at the center to make for a classic centerpiece with a modern twist. Top this off with mint juleps served the traditional way and guests will surely be throwing compliments your way.
Other fun decorating ideas for a summery outdoor dinner include placing coconut candles on tables to give a tropical aroma to the dining area, colored paper hand fans to add color to a classic table setting, bamboo place mats for a tropical touch and personalized napkins for an eye-candy functional treat for guests. Add a summer artwork to personalized napkins like seashells or starfish and the date of the event for a memorable dinner and keepsake.

Dressing for the Occasion
It always happens when you least expect it: an invitation to the big event of the year pops through your letterbox or into your email inbox and you realise that, horribly, you've got nothing to wear.
Whether it's a wedding, a garden party or a charity ball, there are some occasions that require you to dress the part - which is both a delicious and daunting prospect for many people. The majority of us aren't used to dressing up, but it can be incredibly enjoyable when the rare chance arises. What's more, an invitation to a big occasion means an excuse to go shopping - and that's always a welcome notion!
If it's a wedding you're heading to, you can really let your imagination run wild. From classic gowns that'll make you a prominent feature of the day to vibrant little numbers that are sure to have heads turning, dressing for a wedding is a fun challenge - making sure that you don't outshine the bride, of course!
Another enjoyable occasion you could find yourself attending is an aristocratic garden party, where eminent members of the community will be mingling over luxurious snacks and delicious drinks. Whatever the weather, floaty dresses always prove a success at these occasions, particularly longer dresses that sweep down to your ankles and provide a majestic swirl around your legs wherever you walk. With the addition of a waterproof parasol, not only will your outfit be complete but you'll be more than well-prepared should the rainclouds decide to stop by - and you never know who you could find yourself sharing an umbrella with!
Special occasions are a pleasurable part of social life that many people spend a lot of time deciding what to wear for - and with good reason. It's important to look good, so ensure that you give yourself plenty of time to shop around for the perfect dress, suit or other outfit - and don't forget to accessorise! As gorgeous as that evening dress may be, the wrong shoes or bag could destroy the look completely, so spend time hunting down the right accessories. Similarly, jewellery should be chosen to complement the outfit - such as a beautiful pendant coupled with a low cut dress, or a choker necklace for a high neck number.
Whether you're attending a wedding, a garden party or the most exclusive charity ball of the year, make sure your occasionwear doesn't let you down. With the right outfit, you're guaranteed to have a blast - no matter the occasion.

Ideas for decorating a Wedding reception room, when u can't attach things to the walls or ceiling.?
I may have to rent the local community center. It is a big empty room. With very high ceilingss. I already plan to cover the tables w/ white table cloths and either rent chair cover or make some sort of chair wrap out of tulle (which would be much cheaper) I also plan to have lots of fresh flowers.
We had an out door area reserved but it got sold and now I am stuck indoor w/ out door ideas. I love Gardens. How can I make the inside more gardenish? We are not allowed to hang any thing from the walls or ceiling, which really sux b/c I have already purchased 12 white paper parasols...All my ideas involve hanging. Any ideas on ways to hang things with out actually attaching to 20 ft ceiling? I am not afraid to build things.
You can always use garden trellises and wrap beautiful flowers and vines of ivy on them and place them along the walls or in various areas as a decoration. With the trellis, you can just lean it against the wall. Go ahead and still use the paper parasols. That way you don't have to worry about decorating anything on the ceiling, especially if you are having your wedding during the day. If it is at night and you wanted to use twinkle lights, then just wrap them around the parasols. If you just have light background noise of birds and garden type sounds, I think you can make it really fun and beautiful! I am thinking of the rain forest cafe at the moment...
The Long Song
Andrea Levy's father sailed on the Empire Windrush from Jamaica to England in 1948. She was born in London in 1956 and grew up an outsider in that then parochial city, alchemising this experience into three lauded earlier novels. In the fourth, Small Island, she lengthened her reach, exploring the clash of cultures from both sides of the racial divide. It won her the Orange Prize for fiction ...
