Golden retrievers are well known for its huge size primarily because it is a breed of dog that is naturally huge. Their size is very important to their breed and function because they are originally used for hunting and even trained as worker dogs. Breeding them to a small size or I must declare crazy size, like that of a teacup will go against the very nature of this wonderful dog breed.

I must say that in my many years of taking care of retrievers and helping fellow owners care for their goldens the best they can, I haven't seen a teacup golden retriever. But fairly recently, I have read that some breeders are trying to come up with this size only to market them at a much higher cost. They are being marketed as a special breed. But I must warn everyone that this act is just outright cruelty to these dogs.

Imagine fitting a size of an elephant into a small bottle. How would you feel if you are going to own a teacup retriever? Will it make you happy to learn that this type of dog was viciously experimented on just to produce that small a size? In fact, in order to create this type of breed, they have to be mixed with other smaller dog breeds and worse, these are premature baby golden retrievers. In order to have them full term, they need to grow to their normal size even as a baby.

Just like humans who are born pre-mature, you will most likely get a golden retriever that has a lot of birth defects. Since they will not be given enough time to develop completely to its full term, their innate traits and characteristics are likewise compromised. For all you know, what you will get is a dog that is no longer loving and intelligent and strong as their full size counterparts should be.

Golden retrievers are one of the best dog breeds to pet. It is mainly because of their pleasant personality, playful and happy disposition as well as their known intelligence. And all these should come in a huge golden coats package of a true bred golden retriever.

If you prefer a petite cutesy type of dog, then go ahead and get yourself a Chihuahua or a Poodle or even Shiatsus. All these breeds come in smaller sizes that are equally adorable.

Jade Long has been caring for Golden Retrievers for over 20 years and is an author on the subject. It is her goal to see to it that these dogs are cared for properly.
