What is the best way to clean an LCD screen?
The screen on my Laptop is an LCD display (the type without the glass overlay). I know that i can dust it off with a rag as long as I don't apply pressure against the screen, but how can i clean spots on the screen? Will using ordinary glass cleaner harm an LCD surface? or are there specialized cleaning products out there just for LCD screens?
How to clean a laptop screen
1. You could try purchasing the dedicated cleaning solutions and wipes
that are available on the market as these will clean a laptop screen
without harming the delicate protective surfaces of the screen.
However, these can be quite expensive to use on a regular basis so if
you prefer, you can do it yourself.
2. DO IT YOURSELF
The only type of cloth that you should use to produce a sparkling
clean laptop screen is cotton such as an old T-shirt, lint-free
microfiber cloth, or other very soft cloth. A large cloth is best,
since it will help to reduce the risk of leaving streaks across the
screen from finger pressure.
The only safe solution is a mixture of distilled water and isopropyl
alcohol,
Dilute isopropyl alcohol (not rubbing alcohol, as it may contain oil)
into a solution of no greater than 50% alcohol and 50% with distilled
water / deionised water. Purified / bottled water works well too.
A 50/50 mix of white vinegar and distilled water is also effective.
Tap water or other types of water are not suitable and neither are other
types of alcohol so make sure you get it right.
Put the solution in a small atomizer bottle, the type that you push
from the top to get a fine mist. Don't use this, however, to spray
on the screen itself.
First of all turn off your computer, not only for safety purposes,
because it will allow you to easily identify all the marks on your
screen. It’s important that you don’t scrub or press hard in order to
remove any stubborn marks; a clean laptop screen requires
patience and a gentle touch.
Dampen the cotton cloth with the solution and gently wipe away all the
marks.
One good way to do this would be to start at the top left hand
corner and wipe down towards the bottom left hand corner and continue
along until finally you wipe from the top right hand corner to the
bottom right hand corner.
Another Way is
Wipe the cloth against the screen in a circular, or other consistent
motion. Rapid circular movements generally eliminate streaks. Apply an
even pressure to the cloth but take care not to press
Regardless of how you do it, the most important point here is not to
touch the screen with your fingers whilst cleaning it and to resist the
temptation to apply too much pressure. Finally, ensure that the screen
is completely dry before closing your laptop or before turning it back
on.
On a final note, just make sure you dont let your kids do it.
