Here are some more information for Netsuke Dragon:

Netsuke had long been within the Japanese culture as a functional tool to go with the Japanese clothing. The Netsuke fastener worked to hold closed bags or pouches so to keep from loosing the belongings of personal items, but yet each Netsuke fastener also represented the beauties and wonders of Japan's nature, culture and everyday life. Netsuke can be made out of numerous material mediums, but the most common has always, and still is made out varieties of hard woods and different formations of ivories.
The 300 years of originally functioning Japanese Netsuke, out of the many formations of the daily Japanese life's representations, most all are animals. One of the many famous and even controversial Netsukes is the octopus with his nine tentacles wrapped around a woman in some fashion. These specific Netsuke formations may range from subtle artistic works to the more exotic references that can in part represent life reproduction.
Animal representation Netsuke by far is the most popular of the past and present Netsuke. Another animal in the Netsuke collections is the toad, and at times, accompanied by a Sage. The connecting meaning of the 'Toad Sage' is the all powerful sage being accompanied by the toads to give out a magical pill, for those people desiring to live for 100 years. Another Netsuke toad representation is attributed to a supernatural all powerful being of how the toad has a way to disappear in situations that would naturally be virtually impossible to be done.
A couple of other very common animals represented are the monkey and the ape. Both the monkey and the ape are long associated throughout many niches of the Japanese cultural past and present, just as several other animals that also later on became a part of the Zodiac birth calendar cycle. The monkey for example, is one of the animal's representatives on the twelve-year zodiac cycle during the 20th century, and quickly made its way into contemporary Netsuke collections. The monkey has several values and the people born within the year of the monkey are said to be intelligent, agreeable, imaginative, perceptive, and versatile. But on the flip side, the monkey also represents extravagance, vehemence, and eccentric behavioral ways and can be easily excitable.
As mentioned earlier, some of the most popular contemporary Netsuke is based on the Japanese Zodiac Calendar. This is all due to the Japanese folklore of belief in a person's birth year associated with each specific animal was a determining factor in their traits of personality, but also helped in deciding marriage suitability. Besides the monkey mentioned earlier, contemporary Netsuke of the zodiac animals, includes the snake, sheep, horse, rabbit, dragon, rooster, boar, dog, ox, tiger and the rat.
