We talked about 3 common distractions. In this article, I would like to address how we can overcome those meditation detours. We often wonder if we are having a "good sit" or a "good meditation." The one thing we absolutely have to do is stop being so harsh with ourselves. In meditation, there is not a place for that kind of judgment. Meditation is not about getting to a particular frame of mind or state of being, but about being in the moment, being mindful and aware.

I'd like to address each of the three distractions and what we can do to bring ourselves back into the present moment.

1. Mind chatter. Monkey mind. Grocery lists, job worries, fights with loved ones, media advertising, future plans, past regrets. Sometimes the chatter and static in our minds is verbal, other times, it is overwhelming flashes of pictures.

What can we do when we can't turn it off? Depending on the style of meditation you are doing: vipassana or mindfulness meditation, centering prayer, or using a mantra, we simply return to the object of our meditation -- return to the breath or the sacred word or the mantra. Let the noise and pictures continue to flow but try not to become stuck on one of them.

If you do find yourself in a log jam and become aware of it, no matter how painful it might feel in the moment, simply return to your meditation object: breath, word, mantra, candlelight.

2. Physical discomfort: Does your back hurt? Maybe it's your neck or your breathing feels too shallow like you can't get in a good breath. Possibly your foot fell asleep. It's okay. Relax. Breathe into the place it is hurting or tight, adjust your position slightly and discreetly, especially if you are with others. Focus for a moment on the place and do a relaxation technique. First, tighten up the space, then with a deep out breath, mentally watch the tension disintegrate on the exhale. If your foot is asleep, bend your leg out in front of you and plant the sleeping foot on the floor so that you can flex it. Once you've worked through the discomfort return to the breath or the sacred word or the mantra.

Sometimes the pain will not subside. Unless your teacher or facilitator has told you otherwise, you have two options- live with it or move from your spot to address the problem. Just remember that sometimes these are minor distractions to test our initial endurance. An itchy nose will subside if you ignore it long enough. An aching back may require another pillow under you or a straight backed chair to get up off the floor.

3. What time is it? How long have I been doing this? One of the greatest gifts of meditation is learning how to be present no matter what the situation is- boredom, agitation, anxiety, frustration, joy, happiness, sadness, depression, giddiness, guilt. We can either give up entirely or we can learn to wait until the timer goes off or the singing bowl rings. It is up to you. At first, you may not know how to ride out the uncomfortable feelings or the boredom. With practice, though, the time you are able to sit through comfort and discomfort will gradually increase. For me, I like either a quick sit or a really long one where I'm positioned to ride out the feelings that try to dissuade me. It is possible to be present no matter what is going on but you will only find this out for yourself if you don't give up.

What if you find yourself saying your sacred word or returning to counting the breath repeatedly, obsessively, annoyingly? First off, you can stop judging or berating yourself for it. This is common, especially in the beginning as you get comfortable with silence and with stillness. It is alright. The one thing we learn in practicing meditation is to accept ourselves right where we are. So, take a deep, relaxing breath and settle into your position again. It helps to have a community around you that understands what you are doing and has gone through the same challenges. A community like this is developing at Meditation Momentum.

The Sounds Around You

Not everyone knows that when you walk into a store where there is music playing, your heartbeat matches the music in about four to five minutes. The human body is hard wired to respond to sound. And there is no off switch. The sound around you goes through your body faster than it goes through the air.

We hear with our whole body, inside and out. Dr. Alfred Tomatis, the great ear, nose and throat specialist of the 20th century, called skin "undifferentiated ear." Dorinne Davis, an audiologist who founded The Davis Center to continue and expand Dr. Tomatis' work, states, "Every cell is a sound resonator. New research indicates that nerves transmit impulses of sound, not electricity. Every cell emits and absorbs sound." Jonathan Goldman, healing sound pioneer, states, "Sound is a multidimensional living entity."

Wow! This thing we call 'sound', which constantly surrounds us, especially in the city, has a profound effect on us right down to our cells. It is important for us to know how the sound around us affects us at the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels.

The study of wave form on matter is called Cymatics. During the 1950s and 60s Dr. Hans Jenny (1904-1972), a Swiss doctor, artist and researcher, documented the effect of specific frequencies on sand, spores, water, turpentine, iron fiings and other substances which were placed on a vibrating plate or membrane. He published these results in 1967 in a book called, "Cymatics - The Structure and Dynamics of Waves and Vibrations."

"Jenny made use of crystal oscillators and an invention of his own by the name of the tonoscope to set these plates and membranes vibrating. This was a major step forward. The advantage with crystal oscillators is that one can determine exactly which frequency and amplitude/volume one wants. It was now possible to research and follow a continuous train of events in which one had the possibility of changing the frequency or the amplitude or both." (quoted from "Cymatics. The Structure and Dynamics of Waves and Vibrations by Hans Jenny" at www.world-mysteries.com)

"The tonoscope was constructed to make the human voice visible without any electronic apparatus as an intermediate link. This yielded the amazing possiblility of being able to see the physical image of the vowel, tone or song a human being produced directly." (quoted from same article)

For me, watching Dr. Jenny's videos is like taking a journey into the mechanics of the creation of the universe itself. One of the most astounding is his picture of the sound "om" beside a picture of the Shri Yantra.

"Aum (Om) is said to be the primordial sound that was present at the creation of the universe. It is said to be the original sound that contains all other sounds, all words, all languages and all mantras." (Wikipedia)

Well, put on your seatbelts, folks, and click on the links below to see for yourself a few examples of the powerful effect sound has on matter. Remember as you watch these videos that you are matter too and that sound affects you in similar ways. Even the sounds you make as you speak to another has a physical effect on the matter in their body. Not to mention the emotional effect behind your words or sounds. As we awaken to the ancient remembrance of the sacredness of language and sound, we begin to take more responsibility for the sounds we make and the sounds around us.

Can the Kundalini be raised by sound?

By sound I mean overtone chanting, mantra and with instruments like temple gongs, trumpets and singing bowls

Kundalini cannot be raised by sound alone. The Kundalini has fallen from its original primordial state, because of our indulgence in pleasure, ego-gratification and sensation that is detrimental to the entire physical organism and the only way to raise the Kundalini is through unity skills and methods to cultivate, transform, redirect and distribute the earth’s ground energy, food energy, sexual energy, dormant primal energy, emotional energy, sound energy, mind energy, breath energy, the secretions of the endocrine glands and the energy from the mysterious art of sleep, rest, relaxation and meditation; only then can we raise the Dragon’s force and reach the ultimate convergence in oneself.

Thought and its continuous movement of attachments, associations, memories, dreams, emotions, desires and biological urges separates us from the original primordial state and when thought and its entire involuntary movement goes into abeyance through contact with the silent observer and its vivid and electric power of witnessing, the Dragon’s force rises to the crown centre, reuniting the conditioned temporal state with the original primordial state and for that to happen we need to practice unity skills and energy cultivation, transformation and redirection methods to attain a body that is a powerful, sensitive, responsive, instrument; vital energy, internal force, concentrated mental power and the ability to direct it and intuitive faculties that align with unconditioned intelligence.

The empowerments to raise the Kundalini must include the art of harmonious discipline, internal cleansing, fasting, ultimate nutrition, sexual energy cultivation, transformation and redirection, primal energy work, yogic exercises, gestures, postures and breath energy work, internal and external power training, dual cultivation, physical, sensory, mental and emotional control methods; the art of sleep, rest, relaxation and serene contemplation; mantra, dynamic, active and passive methods of Dhyan/meditation.

So sound energy cultivation is one of the empowerments but only when it is used in conjunction with the other empowerments will the Kundalini rise there are no short cuts.
