Not all apartment or condo dwellers want tiny foo-foo dogs! Some prefer a full size dog...even a giant dog. The good thing is, not all dogs need endless exercise.

Fret not apartment/condo dweller, there is a perfect dog for you. It weighs between 130 -225 pounds. It can reach 27-32 inches at the shoulders. When socialized and properly trained as a puppy, they are sweet natured, affectionate, docile, stately, yet courageous when need be.

It is almost impossible to imagine, this extraordinary animal was once used as war dogs, for hunting, and guarding flocks of sheep, monasteries, and castles. They were also used for lion and bull baiting. Incredibly, the breed almost died out for lack of food, during WWI and again during WWII. Thankfully, a mating pair from Canada brought the breed back from near extinction.

They need approximately 45- 60 minutes of moderate exercise preferably two times a day. A good walk or romp in the dog park, and they are ready to go home. Tire them out, and they stay out of trouble. The rest of the day, they're happy lounging around the house watching the Animal Planet and catching a snooze, until you get home. They do snore!

As puppies, it is best to socialize them as soon and much as possible. Puppy Kindergarten, preferably one that applies positive reinforcement, punishment-free methods work best with this gentle giant. They would favor a huge hug, lots of praise and a kiss on their pipe olive nose, to a piece of steak as their reward for good behavior and pleasing their people. They are not the right dog for a firstime or timid owner.

When socialized young, they love to meet new people and make new dog friends. Otherwise they can be aloof and even cautious. Cats they are familiar with become part of their pack...and will probably get a shlub or two a day with their massive tongue.

They tend to drool and throw slingers...so a towel needs to be handy at all times.

They make wonderful family pets. Because of their enormous size and the fact they are not the most graceful dog on the planet, they are not the ideal pet for a family with small children or for the elderly. They could accidentally bump into them and knock them over. It would not be on purpose! They are just very galoopy!

They make good watchdogs, even though they are not known to be big time barkers. Their sheer size can be intimidating! More often than not, they make noise when they are playing, or "talking" to their person. Some love to converse!

Bottom line: If you live in apartment or condo, but want a giant breed dog, consider the Old English Mastiff. There is something very unique about them!

The show ran about the same time as and covered similar topics to Beakman's World, in fact sharing one crew member, editor/writer/director Michael Gross. He made an appearance on the Disney Channel's New Mickey Mouse Club in its forty-eighth episode Anything Can Happen Day. Before this show, Bill Nye had previously worked alongside Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future: The Animated Series, where Nye played Doc Brown's assistant and demonstrated several experiments.

Bill Nye the Science Guy has been likened to a modern Mr. Wizard. Bill's TV persona is a tall and slender scientist wearing a lab coat and a bow-tie. He mixes the serious science of everyday things with fast-paced action and humor. Each show begins with Bill walking onto the set, called "Nye Labs", which is filled with scientific visuals (including many "of science" contraptions announced dramatically, such as "The slingshots of Science!") relevant to the topic of the show. Most episodes contain a mock song parody and music video in the "Soundtrack of Science" by "Not That Bad Records", substituting a scientific roundup of the episode for the lyrics to a popular song. Each show ends with Bill explaining his departure in a clever description of an activity on topic. The credits sometimes rolled next to a series of outtakes from the episode. Other times, outtakes are shown at the time they actually happened.

Another popular member of the cast is the announcer Pat Cashman, whom Nye knew from his time on Almost Live!. Some announcers who subbed in for Cashman include Ernie Anderson, Gary Owens, and Brian Cummings. In 1996, Bill made a guest appearance on Cartoon Network's talk-show Space Ghost Coast to Coast in its twenty-fourth episode, Boo! with Michael Norman. A year later, he made a guest appearance on the long-running PBS series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

Theme song

Aside from Bill himself, one of the most memorable things about Bill Nye the Science Guy is its theme song. The bass-heavy theme is set to a Hip hop beat with Bill's name shouted throughout the duration of the song. The sound and speed fluctuations of the voice were accomplished through a vocoder and electronic pitch fluctuator. The theme song is credited to Mike Greene.

Video Game

A computer game for the series, titled Bill Nye the Science Guy: Stop the Rock!, was released in 1996 for PC and Macintosh by Pacific Interactive. In the game, a large meteoroid called "Impending Dum" threatens to make a catastrophic collision with the Earth. A team of scientists develop a laser satellite-controlling computer system called MAXX to destroy the meteoroid; however, MAXX develops a personality of its own (in an obvious parody of the sentient computer HAL from the film and novel 2001: A Space Odyssey) and refuses to save the planet unless Earth's scientists can solve seven science riddles. Nye Labs decides to take on MAXX's challenge, and the player, depicted as the newest member of the Nye Labs team, is asked to solve these riddles before Impending Dum hits (represented through an in-game timer). The game featured a fully explorable Nye Labs, as well as video cut scenes featuring Bill Nye and other Nye Labs scientists. However, the characters and cast members from the TV series, sans Bill Nye and a few others, do not appear in this game, instead being replaced by game-exclusive Nye Labs team members and new actors.

Calling creative, think outside the box types - toddler boy bedroom decor dilemma?

When my 2 yr old boy was 5 mos old, I bought a used race car toddler bed from a friend at a good price. I've stored it since then. Now that he's almost ready for the move to the toddler bed, I'm faced with the dilemma of decorating his room.

The thing is that his interest and love is animals, specifically safari type animals, like zebra, giraffe, elephant, lion, tiger, etc. He loves watching Diego and his animals, and is absolutely enthralled with the Madagascar movies, Kung Foo Panda, and Happy Feet.

His room currently doesn't have a theme, but when he moves to a toddler bed, I'm going to decorate it. I want to do it in animals, obviously.

I'm looking for any ideas about how I could possibly incorporate the race car bed into a jungle safari. Or, do you think it even matters? Or, do you think I should sell the bed, and get something different (my least favorite option, just due to not having time or energy to try to sell the race car bed).

I like the idea of painting the racecar bed a khaki color and turning it into a safari vehicle, there are tons of plastic paints available.

Or, turn it into a jungle race, make little cloth helmets for his animals w/ numbers on them, and teach him how to "race" w/ them. That would be absolutely adorable and unique
