Flooring styles and options is one of the home decorating and improvement decisions that often take homeowners a long time to finalize. This is partly due to the expense of purchasing and installing new flooring, and partly due to the inconvenience a household undergoes when entire rooms of the home are off-limits due to flooring remodeling. But as styles change and flooring becomes worn out, it is a remodeling adventure that most homeowners must eventually face.
Tile and hardwood floors offer long-lasting beauty and hold up well over decades, making them popular flooring choices. However, tile and hardwood floors are often cold, and can create echo effects in a room. To warm a room up and make it more inviting, many homeowners choose to add wall to wall carpet or large antique rugs. This creates a more cozy feel, and offers a soft area in the floor for children to play. Carpets and rugs also add color, design, and style to a room. For these reasons, some form of carpeting is usually necessary. But many homeowners struggle with the decision to invest in wall to wall carpet or large antique rugs.
Very often, the prices are quite similar. Wall to wall carpet must be installed, usually by professional installers, and this drives up the price. Large antique rugs often seem more expensive on the price tag, but when installation is considered, they are often equitable. Don't just assume that antique rugs are out of the budgeted price range. Instead, shop around in local Los Angeles antique rug dealer showrooms and compare prices with delivery and installation included.
Of course, the floor under the rug must be considered, especially if any of the floor will show around the area rug. If only subflooring is present, then wall to wall carpet is really the only option. Luckily, advances in manufacturing and materials have made wall to wall carpet more attractive than in previous decades. Modern wall to wall carpet also tends to hold up better than in past years, though it still doesn't compete with antique wool rugs in durability.
If the carpet is to cover a wood, stone, or tile floor, consider an antique wool rug. Allowing the floor underneath to show around the area rug adds visual design interest to the space. Both antique and new wool rugs boast serious durability. Wool is a hearty material that stands up well to wear and tear, including the dirt and wear of heavy foot traffic. Hand-knotted wool rugs often last generations-- many are still in existence that date back to the mid-18th century. When properly cared for, these floor coverings usually do not need replacing in an entire lifetime. Whereas, wall to wall carpet usually needs replacing every five to ten years. Once the costs are added up, antique wool rugs are often the better investment.

Antique Rug: Investment or Decoration?
Many collectors will talk about the age and distinction of an Antique rug, but as with any antique object its value is only what someone will pay for it. The average customer needs to remember an Antique rug is first and foremost a decorative object. Just as a car's primary function is to move one from place to place; an antique rug should be bought to compliment the room it will go into.
Quality is important. Just as one wants a car that will retain its value, a rug should stand up to normal use. Antique rugs are generally at least 50-80 years old and due consideration should be made to ensure they are in good condition. If the underlying warp and weft threads are showing wear and tear or do not seem to be firmly woven, then the pile of the rug can come off and destroy the entire rug. If the woolen pile is not tied or woven tightly enough, it can also come off during normal use.
If the antique rug is particularly old or valuable then hanging it might be more practical than putting it on the floor where gravity pulls most dirt and debris. Investment grade rugs are very rare, and most buyers will rather be looking at a decorative floor item. Be sure to look at the rug from the correct perspective. One would not want to buy a car too fancy to drive on a regular basis. Don't let the idea that this rug is an investment cloud good judgment.
A valuable, naturally-dyed antique rug might be a good investment, but if the room is full of modern bright colors, it may not look right. Go to as many reputable shops as one can before making a final decision. Varieties of color and styles can be found even among antique rugs and limiting your selection to one shop isn't good from either a decoration or investment strategy. A good quality antique rug should last one longer than a car, and if it is taken care of will become a family heirloom.
Proper care should include rotating the rug and spot cleaning any spills quickly with water or club soda. Occasionally beating the antique rug outside to dislodge dirt and debris from the pile might be more gentle on the edges and fringe than running a vacuum over it. Take time to move the rug around seasonally to prevent wear patterns from forming. This will give one the chance to keep the rooms style updated and the rug in good condition.

How can I clean a large antique solid brass lamp to restore the shine?
This lamp had a finish over the lamp to make it look antique in color, I want a shine finish. I started to use a product that was a paste, but it will take me forever to polish, the lamp has many small parts also. The lamps were bought in 1975 from Ethan Allen.
This is cheap and you probably have some.
Anything that contains a natural acid, such as vinegar, Tobasco Sauce, ketchup, tomatoes, milk, and lemon or lime juice, will remove tarnish. The tarnish washes away with an acid rub or soak. You might have to remove the lacquer cover if the brass is new. Do this by submerging the brass in boiling water with a few teaspoons each baking soda and washing soda (available in the laundry section of the supermarket). Once the lacquer has peeled off, polish dry.
