No. People who believe it are ignorant. Try it and you will know. Pls note that even if u get something bad, that doesn't mean the statue is almighty and it's the one that causes you bad happening. It's u yourself to have caused the bad happening. If u live righteously and have done nothing wrong, worry what? It's the psychology. It's the guilt. It's the thoughts - this is also a cause for the following thing to happen. There must be reason and cause of an happening. But be logical. Be conscious. Be wise. Be calm. We live in the world of cause and effect. Pls understand the truth of cause and effect - karma. Buddhism is a special kind of natural science encompassing all living beings and the universe, and of course the human. Buddhism is knowledge. Buddhism is philosophy. Buddhism is the way of living (of course I don't mean to say other religions are not good, in fact, the initiative of all religions, is for the goodness and humankind). You shouldn't step on them (statue) as a sign of reverence. But you shouldn't worship them as they give u nothing - it's you that work things out and give u anything - this is Buddhism, many people would misunderstand it, like what is the 'use' or the 'gist' of Buddhism.. it's too hard to tell u everything about Buddhism, so here, to enlighten the doubtful u, I would say a little bit more about Buddhism. Buddhism suggests every single thing in this world - all beings - and the universe (of the Milky Way galaxy where we are, other galaxies, and the contents of it, starts, planets, anything and any space, trees, environment, animals, microorganism, etc.) are interconnected. A person will have birth and death but life is eternal and is always going on. So is the sun, the stars, the world etc.. The cause of doing one thing will have its effect on the other thing, and the process goes on. This is even tried and true in natural sciences which also suggest cause and effect in laboratory experiments. Buddhism suggests every life has its own mission irreplaceable by any of others. Life is invaluable. Life itself has limitless potentials which most of them are yet to be realised by the self and manifested in reality - the ability to solve problem, to heal, to think creatively, to achieve what is perceived by the self as impossible, etc. The customary Buddhism would suggest that one can be 'blessed' by doing a lot of good deeds, practising Buddhism, chanting mantra, going vegetarian, etc., but the true essence of Buddhism suggests that that's not all, every single human can be enlightened and achieve Buddhahood. This is not well accepted by many of the Buddhism practitioners but it's a truth from Shakyamuni Buddha. Buddhahood is not as simple as going to heaven with the gold shining ring above the head and the ability to fly or being worriedless without problems etc, in fact they are never like that which we are used to seeing in or have known through Buddhist parables, stories, movies etc. In fact, Buddhahood happens in real life.. Shakyamuni himself, a Buddha is not worriedless at all - he has his problems like how to save the people, how to make the people learn better, how can he himself live to help other, etc.. Buddhahood is a state of life. A person who attains Buddhahood will continue to have problems in life, but he/she is enlightened to the condition where he can take all of them, all the problems would seem fluffy or not troublesome to them (I don't mean they will ignore or belittle the problems), as they can solve them with wisdom, courage, compassion etc.. There are endless examples to show. Likewise, Buddhahood is always there but is not permanently achieved in a person. While Buddhahood can come extremely hard, it can go extremely easily. So, Buddhists will always have 'down' time and 'high' time. The important thing is that how the Buddhists continue to practice correctly and overcome the ''down" side more with manifestation of the good state of life. (In Buddhism, there are ten states of life condition, the highest being the Buddhahood and the lowest being the Hell). Having said this, the Buddhism actually implies that all human has limitless potential and life force - the humans just need to believe in themselves and the truth of Buddhism and realise it through practising Buddhism in reality.. Buddhism teaches us how to look at the world, how to live the world, how to face the world. Buddhism does not actually focus on heaven in somewhere or hell in elsewhere. Budhhism instead prepares human in reality - the world where we are - for the death and the next life, not afterlife. Absurd? Unbelievable? Go to explore it out more.. It's NEVER simple by all means
