Nana Korobi Ya Oki - '7 Times Down 8 Times Up'

On the left lapel of every adult student here at Warrior Concepts, there is a patch bearing the Japanese kanji character 'NIN.' Although the kanji itself has two pronunciations in Japanese, it is the original Chinese meaning of "perseverance," "to endure," or "to put up with" that we focus on heavily in the Warrior Concepts Life Mastery Program. And, even though our youth students do not wear the same patch, this concept is imbedded deeply into their programs as well.

When we talk about the concept of perseverance, everyone seems to be in agreement. "Yes," they agree, "one should have the ability and willingness to stay the course."

But, when we look around us, why are their so few examples of this quality?

In Japan, there is a saying, Nana Korobi Ya Oki, which means, "seven times down, 8 times up." It can be seen displayed in the WCI main dojo ("training hall") on the noren banner hanging in the front training room surrounded by several Daruma Dolls - themselves symbols of goal-setting and success.

This phrase, like the kanji character NIN, is a reminder that not everything in life is (or should be) easy. If it were, there would be no need for grading in school - or school itself for that matter - social services and the like. The fact is: life has difficulties.

But, it's not about whether or not something is difficult or easy, but in how we deal with that thing, that makes the difference and brings with it the equivalent success or failure.

In Today's culture, it seems that the drive-up-window mentality rules the day. It is this very "I want it now or I'll go somewhere else" thinking that is destroying careers, families, and society in general. When no one is willing to "stay the course" and work through difficulties and challenges, nothing gets better and we are perpetually stuck in a "start-over" cycle.

Can you imagine how disastrous this could be in a self-defense situation? Where everything we do, we do with either...

1) the mindset of "If this doesn't work the first time, I'll just quit," or...

2) the inability to take the attacker down and lock him up, causing a situation where the fight is continually being reset to zero.

In the first scenario, the all-or-nothing mentality will cause us to simply lie-down-and-die at the first sign of trouble. In the second, we will run ragged trying to maintain enough energy for a sustained assault.

The truth is that, sometimes, we will have to endure, to persevere, to put up with things that are uncomfortable. Because, if we take action now, we will be in greater danger.

So, with the greatest of ninja skill...

...we wait.

We wait for the opportunity when something can be done that will effect a victory for us.

This is the core lesson of nana korobi ya oki. It is what allows a ninja warrior to go beyond what most others see as possible. It is the ability to - no matter how many times we're knocked down, attacked, restrained or threatened - get back up and take that next important step toward the fulfillment of our vision.

This is one of the most important traits of a winner - a survivor - the ability to 'go on.' That's why Hatsumi-Sensei, our grand master has said for years, "Keep going!" He says that you have to give everything a good effort and not give up too soon. This includes your martial arts training.

But, to him - a ninja master - a good effort is at least ten years. He says that, if after that time you're still not getting it - you're still not making progress - then, and only then, should you consider trying something else.

Because in the end, it will not be those who sought mastery who will find it, but those who sought to master themselves with the spirit that "I will find it, no matter how how many times I have to go at it or start over."

It is they who will have set their minds and hearts firmly on their vision, and with firm resolve and disciplined action, moved confidently into their future to attain their goal.

Life is challenging and difficult sometimes but, you are stronger. And, the next time it knocks you down - get up and keep going. And remember the Ninja Warrior's motto:

..."Never give up!"

Review of Rosetta Stone Japanese Version 3 Level 1, 2 & 3 Set with Audio Companion (CD-ROM)

1. What are in Rosetta Stone Japanese Version 3 Level 1,2 & 3 Set?
This new version of software came out with voice recognition -- with visual pronunciation feedback and audio companion CDs. The photographs are high-resolution and colorful, and there are native speakers modeling pronunciation.
It is split into three levels, with each level containing four units covering everyday themes such as food, health, activities, friends, and dining out. Each level contains a core unit, as well as additinal speaking, reading, writing and listening practice.

2. How does Rosetta Stone teach?
Rosetta Stone works on the theory of learning a second language by the same methods people used to learn their first language as infants. There are three main teaching methods of visual association, intuition and repetition. To learn foreign languages, people would use different ways. Some folks have to see it to learnt it, and some hear, and some have to use their hands or move in order to learn. Rosetta Stone excels in these three area, it's bright and clear photographs is for learning by SEE; native-speaker modeled digital is for learning by HEAR and fill-in and matching, typing practise is for kinesthetic learners.
Yes, there are advantages for Rosetta Stone. It features an extremely easy-to-use interface, with lesson trcking for completed lessons -- complete with dates completed. The high-quality photographs are easy to discern. The voice recognition can be finicky even when set on NORMAL, but generally does a good job of eliciting accuate pronunciation.
In addition to the emphasis on "interactivity," Rosetta Stone's method still relies on the audiolingual method, by which learners can learn language by repeating pronunciation and grammar drills. Such repetition throughout the many exercises quickly grew redundant.

3. How is Rosetta Stone teaching Japanese?
Rosetta Stone Japanese version use three unique alphabets: hiragana -- for words of Japanese origin, katakana --for loanwords, and kanji -- Chinese characters. Rosetta Stone offers four options of Romaji, Hiragana, Kanji and Kanji with Furigana. However, there are no writing or reading exercises that address the kanji reading, stroke order or kanji combinations;when you type answers, you do so using your keyboard, so Rosetta Stone may not be as helpful for kanji.
Another problem with Rosetta Stone's teaching is that the grammar presentation is lacking in explicit grammar instruction. This is a huge issue with languages that are significantly different from English, such as Japanese with its subject-object-verb word order and particles, and counters, and honorific speech. For example, and you will find yourself longing for a more traditional textbook to explain the finer points.
Moreover, the biggest shortcoming is the lack of culture of Japanese embedded in the lessons. You are learning Japanese, sure, but the stock photos feature people of different ethnicities and regional costumes that often have nothing to do with the language being studied. Although some traditional Japanese foods such as rice and tea are mentioned, there are not any mention of traditional Japanese foods such as kaiseki. The same applies for traditional Japanese dress - kimono, hot springs and ryokan hotels. If you want more information, you have to read up elsewhere.
Also, even though rosetta stone allows you to work on correcting your pronunciation, there are no real allowances for spontaneous conversation, an important step in truly becoming fluent in a language.

4. How much will you spend?
Rosetta Stone requires a fairly large investment of time and money. Each unit takes a minimum of several hours to complete, more if you do all the optional pronunciation exercises and if you don't skip the activities. And extra time is needed for review your work.
What's more, the cost for the complete sets (Levels 1, 2 and 3) is close $500; you might also consider enrolling in a language class at your community college for that price. However, if you're interested in a less-commonly-taught language such as Pashto, Irish, Indonesian or Welsh, Rosetta Stone presents a valid option.
Rosetta Stone comes with the software, three separate Audio Companion CD sets, and a headset with microphone. It would probably be very effective for children, since they are hardwired to pick up languages until early adolescence, but as an adult learner, the activities is to be too repetitive to hold a continued interest, and the lack of explicit grammar discussion may be also a disappointment.

Though, Rosetta Stone language software is short in some area, but that is not to say that Rosetta Stone isn't effective. Rosetta Stone may not be the optimal language learning tool for everyone. Even so, it's one of the most impressive attempts at dynamic language learning on the market, and deserves a trial.

Can you translate this from japanese?

"Kekkonshiki de watashi wa kimono o kimashita. Tenki ga yokute, momiji mo kirei deshita.

Sweden ni itte mitai desu ga, totemo tooi desu. Airurando kara wa chikakute ii desu ne!

Shumatsu kanarazu renshu ni itte imasu.
Uma wa watashi no boyfriend desu(!?).

Isshukan ganbarimasho!"

It may seem entirely crazy and random, but id appreciate a literal translation if anyone can manage it!

Romaji will suffice, i dont need kanji or hiragana translation,
Thank you v much!

"uma wa watashi no boyfriend desu."

Still need more consensus on this...

"Kekkonshiki de watashi wa kimono o kimashita. Tenki ga yokute, momiji mo kirei deshita.
At the wedding, I wore a kimono. The weather was nice, the maple leaves too were beautiful.

Sweden ni itte mitai desu ga, totemo tooi desu. Airurando kara wa chikakute ii desu ne!
I would like to visit Sweden, but it's too far. Wouldn't it be nice if it were closer to Ireland?

Shumatsu kanarazu renshu ni itte imasu.
Will definetely go to practice this weekend.

Uma wa watashi no boyfriend desu(!?).
The horse is my boyfriend.

Isshukan ganbarimasho!
I'll do my best for a/this/the week!
But that might also mean "Let's do our best for a/this/the week!"

Thanks for visiting!
