Fabric painting has been traced back to the time around 3000 B.C., as printing blocks of that era were found in Asia. In the earlier times before the entire world was caught up in the net of fabric painting the craftsmen from Japan and China developed the form of stencil and resist technique of fabric painting. In these forms, the person requires to apply pressure on the material to which the pigments are already attached, from behind, so that the pigment gets affixed to the texture.

There are various forms of fabric painting styles that have come up today, but the ones that are most popular, are the tie-dye and batik methods. They can be discussed individually with references to their traits:
* Batik: The pattern of fabric painting seems to have originated from Java, as the name suggests "writing of wax" in the Javanese language. The general idea is to apply wax and dye together upon the material forming gorgeous designs that would attract anybody. This form of fabric painting, has been revived and led to higher limits at the academic based art schools, and has inspired many minds to consider fabric painting.
* Tie-dye: Another form of fabric painting that involves simple technique of tying a small portion of the material and putting it inside the dye. The portion that does not come in contact with the dye, remains uncolored, and thus, leads to the formation of a color design; it is also known as the resist method. On several occasions different colored dyes are used to form designs on different parts of the cloth, making a dull material look gorgeous.
Starting with these methods, people have now opened boutiques of their own, where they display their designer collection of clothes that have fabric painting on them done exclusively by hand. The basic advantage of fabric painting is that the color used, is not watering and, can be washed and worn from time to time.
Apart from clothing, fabric painting is also applied upon vases and various other show-pieces that may seem dull. With the help of fabric painting, we can give a new look to the different items that have been with us for a long time but are not trendy any more. Thus, fabric painting as we can see has captured its own niche in our lives and is evolving gradually.

I would like to buy ready made batik skirts ; those made using 'real ' batik, and not the tie and dye type .
I especially like those that are made with ethnic Indonesian / Javanese style batik . Are any sold in retail shops here? I found some at OG dept store, but range is very limited. Most of those sold online are the tie and dye varieties.
have u tried Arab St or maybe Geylang Serai?or shops selling the Peranakan clothes....
