God I hate those stupid jars!
Try opening it with a towel or, preferably, some sort of thin rubber thing between the jar and your hand, for better gripping.
You can also hit the underside of the lid on the edge of a table or counter to loosen it a bit.
If neither of those suggestions work, try taking a bottle opener and using it lightly all around the lid to loosen it, then try opening it again.
