Red Japanese Maple turning green?
I planted a red japanese maple last fall, it's doing pretty good, growing good, etc. but it has turned green. Is this normal? I thought it was supposed to stay red. The new shoots are red though. It does have a little burnt edges around leaves, I suppose from the morning sun. Does it need to be watered more? If the green is normal in the summer months, does it turn red again in the fall?
Yes, for the type of Japanese Maple you have, it's normal to change from red to green in the summer & then turn back to red in the fall, especially if it is in too much shade. That's the way my "Bloodgood" Japanese Maple was when I got it last year. But this year, when I moved it to an area where it got a bit more sunlight, it's now a dark red-purple! (I'm expecting it to turn a brighter red color this fall). Here's confirmation of this from an expert::
"Japanese red Maple leaves turn from red to green when the intensity of light is decreased.
Most if not all varieties of red leaf plants lose the red color if the leaves are in a shaded area. Our trees are grown close together to conserve water and help keep plants standing.This causes the new upper most leaves to become very red and the leaves that are shaded by other leaves to become green. Once these trees are given more space the red color comes back." (1)
Here's another interesting point:
"Trees grown from seed lose their red leaf color in summer, which may be disappointing to the homeowner. " (2)
Hope your tree wasn't grown from seed. Try moving it to an area where it gets a little more light, & see what happens. As far as the leaves having a "burnt edge", just make sure it's getting enough water & good drainage, & you should see an improvement.
