Situated off historic Highway 101 along California's Central Coast is the unassuming little town of Paso Robles. For years this has been a place to stop for gas on the way to and from other touristy destinations, but things have changed since the surrounding foothills were found to be suitable for viticulture. In recent years, Paso Robles has grown to be the Central Coast powerhouse for wine production. Over 200 wineries now occupy the rolling hills and mountainous peaks surrounding the town. Add to this a quaint rural town that welcomes and caters to tourists, a historic inn with its own natural mineral water spring, a nearby Spanish Mission worthy of visiting and its proximity to popular coastal communities and you have the makings of a top travel destination.
Paso Robles is best known for its natural mineral springs that bubble to the surface at 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Long before Spanish Conquistadors and Europeans set foot in the region, local Chumash Indians were using the healing water of the springs. In 1891, the magnificent El Paso de Robles Hotel opened its doors as a luxury resort for the wealthy. Soon to follow would be the hot springs bathhouse offering natural mineral water treatments. At one point the hotel was partially owned by a relative of Jesse James, the notorious Western outlaw. Jesse, along with his brother Frank, once stayed on the property to help heal from bullet wounds suffered in robberies. Unfortunately, the original hotel was nearly burned to the ground in a 1940 fire. Within a few years, a new, more modest hotel was constructed next to the surviving portion of the original structure. Today, this hotel stands as the Paso Robles Inn.
The Paso Robles Inn remains a central landmark to the town. The inn consists of several large brick buildings surrounding an inner courtyard and gardens. Amenities include an on-site restaurant, coffee shop, sports bar & lounge, and pool & spa. The gardens are meticulously maintained and feature a babbling brook that flows through the center from the pool to a waterfall and Koi pond that's viewable from the restaurant. Several mature oak trees, a towering cedar and Japanese maples provide plenty of shade below. Although it is a historic inn, the rooms are lavishly decorated and offer modern conveniences like a microwave, mini-fridge, flat screen TV, fireplace and high-speed internet. The thing that sets this inn even further apart from the rest is that they still own the rights to the natural mineral springs. Many of the rooms offer a patio with privacy curtains and a hot tub featuring running spring water.
Directly across Spring Street from the inn is a central park with a children's playground, historic library, gazebo, fountain and plenty of mature shade trees. During summer months, the park serves as a hub for events, entertainment and outdoor market. Surrounding the park are storefront shops, restaurants, wine boutiques and a movie theatre. We dined at several of the restaurants in downtown and couldn't find a bad choice among them. It was difficult not to return to the same place again.
Activities and points of interest abound in Paso Robles, the most popular of which being wine tasting. Wine Wrangler is the local wine tasting shuttle. Choose from their list of popular winery tours or create your own. We recommend using Wine Wrangler or designating a driver because the roads surrounding Paso Robles are mountainous and many wineries are several miles out, the furthest being nearly 16 miles. There are three 18-hole public golf courses nearby, which include a Links course, Hunter Ranch and Chalk Mountain in nearby Atascadero. Lakes Nacimiento and San Antonio offer opportunities for boating, water skiing, fishing and swimming. In the nearby town of San Miguel stands a prime example of an early Spanish Mission. Also in San Miguel is Work Ranch that offers horseback riding treks for its guests and to visitors. Other points of interest include Jack Creek Farm out of Templeton and Green Acres Lavender Farm in Atascadero.
Other places worth visiting that are within an hour's drive from Paso Robles include Hearst Castle and the popular towns of Cambria, Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. Hearst Castle was built by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst in the early 1900's and today is a California State Historic Park. Several tour options award an up-close view of the Romanesque pools, Spanish revival architecture, Mesopotamian statuary and panoramic ocean views from its mountaintop perch. Cambria is directly west of Paso Robles and features an oceanfront boardwalk with several quaint hotels & inns along Moonstone Beach. Further south is Morro Bay with many entertainment choices including kayaking, fishing, restaurants with live music and a submarine that offers voyages below the surface of the bay. Directly south of Paso Robles on Highway 101 is San Luis Obispo. In SLO you will find many restaurants, bars, boutique shops and other interesting places that comprise this unique college town.
The best time to visit the Central Coast is during the Fall. The typical summer fog dissipates and weather cools to the 80's inland. October is harvest season for the wineries and many celebrate with an open house when some even offer free wine tasting. So head out on scenic Highway 101, destination... Paso Robles, where you'll find a rich history, great food, superb wines and healing mineral water. It's a wonderful place for exploration, relaxation and rejuvenation.
