If you want to learn how to fight for real or develop self defense skills that you can stake your life on then you have to develop the right mind set. There are a great number of self defense courses taught that just do not address the fact that the average person who comes to learn self defense has never been in a street fight and does not know what to expect.
This also applies to martial arts schools that claim to teach self defense. Many instructors have never been in a real fight and do not know how to fight in a real situation where there is no referee, they cannot pick the time or the environment. Let' s examine some of the factors that we are faced with in a street fight or self defense situation and that are quite different from the classroom.
1) The attacker is not in any way a friend or training partner and that also includes someone who you know well but is attacking you. Statistics indicate that approximately 75% of attackers are known to their victims.
2) There are no illegal tactics or parts of the body you can hit.
3) There is no referee or coach to control the attack and targets hit.
4) You are more than likely totally unprepared mentally or physically for the attack - no time to stretch or go through a mental preparation program.
5) You don't get to pick the environment to ensure there is nothing that you will trip over or that you will be hit with.
6) Weapons are often used.
7) The assailant may have accomplices.
You will experience an adrenal dump that will greatly affect you ability to use complex techniques and fine motor movements. You may even freeze up.
9) Your mind will be thrown into confusion if you are a mild mannered person that never looks for trouble and are not accustomed to the thugs mentality of just wanting to hurt you; as research indicates that the majority of humans do not want to knowingly hurt others.
Once we acknowledge these factors we will develop a better understanding of the techniques and training methodologies that we need to learn and undertake to develop effective street fighting ability, because let's be realistic self defense in the street or outside of controlled environments is about street fighting.
When learning how to fight, for real in the street, you must address the adrenal stress condition. I would highly recommend taking a self defense course that has an adrenal stress conditioning component built in to it. Train techniques that are simple, quick and brutal in different environments so that you develop a functional effectiveness.
You must also develop a totally focussed mind-set that commits you to a relentless onslaught, devoid of any caring about the welfare of your assailant. Your self protective actions must be carried through until the attacker is neutralized and, if he has cohorts they are put on a psychological back-foot by realizing that they have attacked the wrong type of person and will get hurt severely if they come at you.
