Ikebana is the centuries old Japanese art of arranging cut stems, leaves, and flowers in containers. The many techniques necessary to arrange the stems and flowers are taught in special Ikebana classes. Three to five years of instruction are required to master these technical and aesthetic skills.
In the nearly 700 years that Ikebana has been in practice, several different styles have developed. Among the most popular are rikka(upright flowers), seika (living flowers), and nageire (mixed upright and living). These styles are arranged in tall vases. The moribana style (flung flowers) is typically presented in a shallow dish type container. Ikebana arrangements traditionally decorated the tokonoma, the rooms in the home were guests were received. In the last century, the arranged flowers are seen in entrance halls and the living rooms of private residences as well as public and commercial building lobbies and windows.
The choice of flower is exceptionally important in ikebana. Typically, a single blossom is chosen for the design and it must blend harmoniously with the container. When choosing the flower, the person must consider the season. The flower, vase and season must be compatible. Unlike western floral design, where flowers are layered upon each other, Japanese floral arranging uses the minimal amount of leaves and stems necessary to provide elegant contours that highlight the simple beauty of the flower blossom.
As Ikebana moves into the new century, Western influence can be seen in a few schools. This style is called hanaisho. Although multiple flowers are used in the design, there is no layering and space is maintained around each blossom to strike a balance among all elements of the arrangement. No matter what the influence, the Eastern view of the art form is always prevalent, with nature, simplicity and harmony at the core of the design.
