Japanese Kimono Classical

One of the most common statements that I hear from both Ninjutsu students, as-well-as those training in other 'traditional' forms of martial arts is, "I'm not looking for modern self defense techniques. I'll just stick to the classical approach." This article addresses several flaws in this approach to real-world self defense training in the 21st century.

After you've finished reading this article, your job will be to assess, with a critical eye, your current training, and more importantly, your understanding of that training, to see whether or not you are really prepared to protect yourself against a real attack, from a real attacker, in today's real world - and NOT 16th century Japan, Korea, China, or wherever your art originated!

Please know that I am not criticizing any style of martial arts, or approach to self defense. What I am driving at, is the need to see beyond the "models" that were passed down from ancient times, and be able to see how the lessons - the principles and concepts - that the models are teaching, would, should, and could be applied today.

It's one thing to be able to execute your art's snapping, front punch, or in the case of the modern Ninjutsu student's so-called "classical" tsuki (pronounced: 'ski'), which was originally designed to be effective while wearing, or while dealing with an opponent who was wearing ancient armor...

...and being able to quickly, easily, and effectively punch a modern-day street thug who doesn't care one iota about where you train, the art or style that you have a Black Belt in, or where that style came from. Not one bit!

The same thing goes for your defense tactics against a punch.

To illustrate this point, let me ask you a question. Okay?

The question is: "What kind of punch are you most likely to deal with - to have thrown at you - during a street fighting or street self defense situation?"

A karate front punch?

A ninpo-taijutsu "tsuki?"

A White Crane Kung-fu finger-tip strike?

Nope.

A good old right-cross!

That's not my opinion. That's the cold, hard reality of today's world!

And, this isn't an argument over me telling you that you should train in my system - an ego-based idea that says that, "If I do it, then it's right, and you should be doing the same thing" - but rather a lesson that comes from experience knowing what happens on the street. Because, if you don't know what it's really like inside of a real attack - not a sport or competition setting that's loaded with rules and safety measures - then you can never know if what you're learning will actually work outside of the dojo, dojang, or self defense class!

Do you understand?

Do you get the significance of this apparently simple, little lesson?

I hope so. Because, the question IS NOT: "Are you learning self defense?"

The REAL question is...

"While you're practicing against the "official," "classical," and "proper" strikes from your martial arts' style...

...are you learning how to not get your lights turned off by the guy who doesn't punch like they do in class?!"

Effective self defense requires more than just a few "karate moves." It involves the ability to think strategically, and understand how to defend yourself with as little wear-and-tear on you as possible.

If you really want to know what most people don't know about how to master self defense and how to survive a real street attack, read my newest self defense book: "Fight Smarter - Not Harder!" It's available free at: http://www.warrior-concepts-online.com/street-fighting-self-defense-book.html

Jeffrey M. Miller is an internationally-known self defense expert. Each month he teaches literally thousands of students through live seminars, corporate training events, and his online self defense courses, the lessons to be able to survive in Today's often dangerous world.

Black And White Wedding Invitations - What Are Your Invites Saying?

Elegant. Dramatic. Just plain cool. Few color combinations can say as much as the classic black and white match. That's why its become a go-to choice for brides who want to make a statement. If this two-tone combo is part of your big day, then black and white wedding invitations are a timeless way to announce your upcoming nuptials

Cool - Sure black and white wedding invitations are elegant, but they're also cool--think Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. With this color choice, you're going to appear way too cool for busy color palettes or loud colors.

Fun - Don't get roped into using these bi-color invites only for formal affairs. Black and white can be fun, too. This two-color theme also works well for bold graphic images such as modern black dots on a crisp white paper, or something more whimsical such as adorable penguins.

Surprising -Make black and white wedding invitations jump out by splashing color onto the invite. If you're having a formal summer ceremony, wrap the invitation in a sunflower yellow tie. Or you might use one of the upcoming trends in marriage stationery: black and white invitations with a colorful solid or printed wrap.

Another surprising addition to conventional black and white wedding invitations is graphic patterns. Trend-setting brides are increasingly incorporating bold patterns on the wraps that surround some invitation designs. Many of the trendiest patterns have been inspired by Japanese kimono prints.

Dazzling - Bring on the "wow" factor by sending black and white invitations with jewels attached. If diamonds are your best friend, attach a diamond-like jewel to the invite. For winter or fall nuptials, add a brilliant red jewel to the invite. The contrast between the paper and a gem can make the stationery seem that much more fabulous.

One of the best aspects of black and white invitations is that they often look like you spent a million on them, even if you didn't. They're also one of the easiest do-it-yourself wedding projects because you don't need to stress out about whether your printer will produce that perfect shade of pink you're looking for. Instead, print in black ink and you're on your way to an inexpensive invite that only looks like a million dollars.

For a more contemporary look, find an invitation with a thick black border or paper in an unusual size or shape. You'll get the classic two-color look with a modern sensibility.

Dramatic - There's no rule saying brides must print black ink on white paper. Be bold by printing white text on black paper stock. This look isn't for everyone, but if you have a quirky sense of style and want to surprise your guests, these black and white wedding invitations are the way to go.
