Asian and oriental?
Why do asians get offended when they're reffered to as "oriental"? By asian, i'm talking about Chinese, Japanese etc... Why do they prefer to be called "asian" when asian can also be Indian? I'm just so confused because earlier someone said that i shouldn't call asians orientals since they get offended. What's the reason for this?
It's an outdated term. Old terms for racial groups tend to evolve into vulgar language later. For example, it was common to refer to a Japanese person as a Jap during WWII. It's very rude to say now. It probably has something to do with the fact that American sentiment towards Asians has been pretty...shaky in the past, and those terms are from a time when Asians were being discriminated against.
