There was a time when we did not have such knowledge of the world around us, and how it works the way it does. We did not understand the chemical process of combustion or the makeup of a flame. Fire was a great mystery to us, even after we learned to manage and maintain it. We knew nothing of the delicate cellular requirements for organic life - or of the neurological structures of our brain, which enable us to experience our existence. We assumed that fire had a life of its own, and that all manner of other things were able to experience their own existence, whether or not they had brains, eyes and blood-filled veins.
Our Stone Age ancestors had not yet intellectually separated themselves from the eco-system called Earth - had not elevated themselves to a status above and separate from all else upon this planet - assuming a status greater than the planet itself or the Sun above. Perhaps they remembered deep inside of the time not so distant when they were more likely to be the hunted than the hunter; when they were prey for larger carnivores and omnivores. They would have been more conscious than are we of the non-exclusive nature of consciousness itself.
It seemed apparent, then, that all things shared in the pervasive life-force that we ourselves enjoy. Spirit was seen to be everywhere, in the ground beneath our feet and in all the living things upon it - even in the rivers and oceans, the hills and the mountains. It seemed reasonable to assume that something as organized, purposeful and individual as a river might also share the sensations of being and self-awareness that we experience.
Without today's tools and technologies engaging and distracting us, we were more aware and in touch with all around us. We had to be, for without today's tools and technologies protecting and managing us, we could not so well insulate ourselves from the influence of chance and fortune. There existed a common acceptance that the behaviour we displayed in our lives in some way influenced the behaviour of the natural world surrounding us. Though nobody saw it as religion then, independent belief systems developed around the world, often sharing common traits. Similar ceremonies were performed to encourage the rain, promote successful childbirth, or to correct poorly performing fruit trees - in disparate parts of the world.

My mother has been searching everywhere for a plate or plaque with the kitchen prayer on it, but she has had no luck. Her grandmother used to have one in their kitchen, so it is of sentimental value. I'd like to purchase one for my mother for Christmas, but I am having a hard time finding one. I am willing to buy online if necessary. The one she is looking for looks just like this:
