It is a good idea if you are a serious wood worker to take some time and learn how to fill pores this will enhance the finish of your project whether it be a piano or a simple coat rack. There are basically two different types of fillers available in the market today in oil based filler and a water based filler. Oil-based fillers have been around for decades they have been refined and made better and easier to apply over the years. A sealer coat that is thin will allow a small bit of color from the filler to remain on the surface of the wood, a thicker coat of sealer will completely isolate the wood and only allow the filler into the pores. To prepare for the filler you must first sand the area that will be receiving the filler with 320 grit sandpaper.
Before applying any filler to your project make sure that it is free from any dirt or dust. The filler may be applied by hand or it may be sprayed if you are going to apply it by hand you'll want to use a brush that has very stiff bristles this will allow you to work the filler into the pores. As soon as you are done applying the filler to an area you will want to immediately squeegee off any excess you can use a commercially available plastic squeegee or even a credit card will work just fine. Once the filler has dried or hazed over use a wadded up burlap bag or some cheesecloth to wipe off the excess.
