Will there be a new Star Wars film series?
I have been reading up on the "story" of Star Wars and have found that the story involved has actually continued long after the end of Episode IV.
Many interesting things happen that would make great film series; such as when Luke becomes Jedi Grand Master, marries someone called Mara Jade, trains Leia in the Force, creates the New Jedi Order and teaches new Jedi. Leia marries Han Solo, have three kids, one of them, Jacen Solo, turns to the dark side and takes up the name Darth Caedus, replacing Darth Vader as Dark Lord of the Sith.
I'm convinced that George Lucas, or any one else that might continue the series, would have plenty of stuff to work on if they wanted to make a third series.
There will NOT be anymore live action Star Wars movies. Lucas has stated this over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and OVER again since the release of ep III in 2005. ANYONE who says that there will be is so full of it that it's coming out of their ears.
Lucas also will NOT allow anyone else to make more movies and even has it in his Will that if his children allow someone else to make new movies after his death they will be stripped of ALL of their inheritance.
The truth of the matter is that the 6 episode Star Wars saga that we have now bares little resemblance to the original ideas that Lucas had for the saga in the beginning. Hell, in the early drafts of the story Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader were two different people ... Leia was NOT the "other Skywalker". The story itself has changed time and time again as Lucas sought to create a cohesive story line. The 6 movies we have now are the story of the Skywalker family and how one very powerful family can chance the course of history throughout an entire galaxy. That is the story that Lucas wanted to tell and it has been told ... end of story.
That being said, there is a TON of material in the 100s of books and comics that have come out that could be made into new movies but there are some very basic reasons why it won't happen. The most problematic of these reasons are the "Big 3" of Han, Luke, & Leia. Harrison Ford is on record many times saying that he will NOT do the role of Han Solo again, Lucas had to almost beg him to even do ep VI. Not because he didn't like the character but because he couldn't see a future for the character in the movies and thought that being frozen in a block of carbonite would be the perfect end to the character. When Lucas told Ford of how ep VI would end and the things that would be revealed in it Ford signed on for the movie, but again, he has said over, and over, and over again that he will NOT reprise the role. Mark Hamil is on record saying that he would love to pick up a lightsabre again but that Lucas has told him over, and over, and over that it will NOT happen. Carrie Fisher ... well let's just say that her "metal bikini" days are far, far behind her. Even if he had Hamil and Fisher on board recasting the role of Han would be close to impossible because there isn't anyone out there who could do it anywhere near as good as Ford. Some fans might think that recasting the roles would be fine but I would bet the farm that the majority of fans would not stand for it. The story line has been carried about 50 years after the events of ep VI but the "Big 3" are in all of them and it would not work with a new cast. Dark Horse comics have taken the story 130 years after the events of ep VI and about 5000 years prior to the events of ep VI but as interesting and as good as the stories are most would be a total nightmare to turn into movies. BTW, Jacen Solo did NOT "replace" Darth Vader ... yes, he did turn to the dark side and become a Sith Lord but he was the NEXT sith Lord in the story not a replacement ... may seem like nitpicking of the facts but it isn't and there ARE major differences in that story line.
"MARKWILLSTAR" almost always give the same answer as he has given here when this question gets asked but while what he says IS true he doesn't ever add "the rest of the story" about that book series. The book series he talks about has been dubbed "The Thrawn Trilogy". It was written by Timothy Zahn (and if you look at his answer you see he can't even spell his name right) and consisted of the books "Heir To The Empire", "Dark Force Rising", and "The Last Command". These books are brilliantly written and DO have the "official" stamp from Lucas as the Official continuation of the saga. The other books ARE sanctioned by Lucas but as of yet haven't been given the "official" stamp yet. He is also correct when he says that Lucas was kicking around the idea in 1995 that he might want to make them into movies but the one thing that he NEVER says is that it only took one phone call from Lucas to Ford to end that train of thought as Ford will NOT reprise the role of Han Solo. I think I would drop dead from a heart attack if I ever saw him give the whole truth of the matter about the Thrawn Trilogy. Would they make great movies for ep VII - IX ... without a doubt. Will they actually ever be made into movies ... no ... not a snowball's chance in hell.
The future of Star Wars in animation like the movie that came out this summer but I truly doubt that we will ever see another one released to theaters ... direct to DVD ... hell yes. The many books of the EU would make great fodder for continuing the story in an animated form.
