"Take 5″ with Kobi Levi
Kobi Levi is an Israeli shoe designer who hit the fashion world's lottery when Lady Gaga (recently named "Fashion Icon of the Year" by the CFDA) wore his designs in one of her music videos. Levi's one-of-a-kind creations are handmade in his studio. He designs his artistic line and also collaborates with a shoe chain store in Israel designing a women's commercial fashion shoe line. ShoesTV caught up with Kobi Levi and got him to "Take 5."

1. How did you become interested in designing shoes?
I've always been fascinated with the shapes and forms I saw in footwear. I looked at it as wearable sculptures. I studied art first and "somehow" footwear kept finding its way into my creations – so during my design studies in college I decided to focus on my passion.
Double Boots
2. How did Lady Gaga come to wear your shoes?
I was contacted by Nicola Formichetti's studio (her stylist) for the "Double Boots" for the Born This Way video. I was surprised, amazed and so flattered! They did a great job with the video. It is amazing and it's so great to have a little part in it.
Blow
3. What is the reaction to a sexy shoe like "Blow?"
Well, there is always a reaction. This design was inspired by an inflatable sex-doll and it resembled a suggestive body posture silhouette with the blow mouth as the peep-toe and a mouth piece at the "tail." This is my twist on the "sexy footwear" term. High heel shoes are a sexy accessory and I took it forward and designed it after another sex-product……Different people react differently. I guess it depends on the person's "relation" to the theme, but for me it's a funny design with a statement/criticism about the commercialization of sex.
Blond Ambition
4. How does pop culture/music influence your shoes?
I like pop culture. First of all, it's fun! I like it more when there is a message and meaning in the mix. With pop-culture you can express yourself through visual "tools" like design, fashion, art as well as music and they can all be combined together. I like Madonna's work and she is a huge pop icon so I designed the "Blond Ambition" piece after her iconic cone-bra look.
Another character I paid homage to is Olive-Oyl (Popeye's wife) with her simple iconic look that can be recognized immediately even after so many years.

5. You are about to take a tour around the world and can only take 5 pairs of shoes. Which would you pick and why?
Oh no… asking a parent to choose???? How can I pick "favorite kids"…. Mmmm. I cheated a little. I chose "couples" in some cases…
1. Market (Red Basket): This is my first "crazy" shoe back in college in 1998. Looking back, it predicted my way of design.
2. Double Boots: One of the most complicated to make in the start of my design journey. They have a scary look when on the feet and they were worn by Lady Gaga, my first celebrity.
3. Chewing Gum and SlingShot: It is freezing a moment. It's funny and creates a stiletto in a surprising way.
Slingshot
4. Miao and Toucan…oh and Slide: These ones have a great "match" between the image and the shoe.
Slide
5. Blow and the XXX pump: They redefine the term "sexy footwear."
XXX
It is weird to choose. I wouldn't design and make a shoe if I didn't want to choose it… Makes sense right? If I'm picking five shoes practically and not as design choices, I would pick them according to their use:
1. One for long walks that I don't mind ruining.
2. One for going out dancing that I don't mind to get stepped on a lot.
3. One dressy look for daytime that won't "get in danger."
4. One dressy look for evening for "safe" events and….
5. One to show-off even if I won't wear it at all.
