Anyone planning a trip to South Africa should ask themselves the question what is the best time of year to travel to South Africa and why? You are already with your hand deep inside your pockets, so you definitely want to make your South Africa vacations the best that they can be.
To answer these questions, first ask yourself what the most important aspects of your trip will be. Do you plan to go on Safari? May to end of August is a good choice and there are a number of reasons for this. Being in the Southern hemisphere, South Africa in this time frame is in the middle of their winter. What does that mean for you? Clear skies and lots of sunshine throughout much of the country (with the exception of the Western Cape), sparse foliage making it easier to spot game and less water available for animals to drink, ensuring that there is nearly always something interesting to see near watering holes and rivers, whereas at other times of the year many animals may virtually disappear into the bush. For a winter visit, the Natal coast might be warm enough for some to enjoy the beach and also, if you go at the right moment in June/July, you might have the privilege to experience the sardine run, bringing together thousands of dolphins, seals and any other imaginable sea life without ever having to touch the water.
Do South Africa vacations make you think of heading for the beautiful beaches or if jumping into that picture perfect pool of your hotel or Safari lodge appeals to you, don't imagine that it would be too much fun in July (ask someone who knows), rather try to plan your vacations for between December and February. Benefits of going in the South African summer time also includes the possibility to enjoy all the best that the Western Cape has to offer - wine tours, a scenic tour to the top of Table Mountain or a stroll along the V&A waterfront to mention but a few - and it's worth noting that there are also many worthwhile parks in this region where you could enjoy top-notch Safaris, with most of the benefits of going to one of the larger parks in the north during winter time.
Summer in the Northern provinces, if you have the need to travel between September and April, doesn't go without its perks. Look for spectacular vistas of purple Jacaranda blooms in Pretoria and world-famous floral displays in the desertic Namaqualand in spring and the chance to see the Bushveld in lush green glory and experience a real African storm during peak summer. Keep in mind, however, that November to middle January is summer vacations, student and scholar peak season, so expect roads and towns (especially up the East coast), to be much busier and noisier than normal, and for national travel to be more expensive. Then, at last, enjoy excellent opportunities to go shopping year round. Curios bought from locals can be a real steal and will make great gifts and memoirs for your South Africa vacations.
South Africa is an intriguing destination with a population consisting of a distinct mix of friendly people. All factors that make South Africa vacations a unique experience, as well as fun and memorable.

Samburu Serena Safari Lodge Samburu Kenya
Samburu Serena Safari Lodge is a luxury Game Hotel located on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, in the center of the Samburu Game Reserve Kenya. The Samburu Serena Lodge echoes the robust rhythms of Africa riverfront life. Serena Samburu Lodge was inspired by the architecture of the indigenous Samburu tribe; it blends into its natural environment by making full use of native materials.
Thatched cabins built using exotic African woods create an escapist atmosphere. Accommodation in Samburu Serena Hotel is cooled by breezes off the river and overhead punkah fans. All guestrooms have private verandahs with uninterrupted vistas of the languid river and the wildlife it attracts, as well as the countless crocodiles that make the waters their home. Gracious dining and lounge areas are enhanced by Samburu details and murals depicting local nature. The Samburu dancers will entertain you during one of your days here, and it might even be possible to visit one of their villages if you're interested, for a nominal small fee.
Samburu Serena Safari Lodge, which is managed by Serena Hotels, Luxury Safari tented Camps & Lodges is set in a landscape of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers, this refreshingly rustic lodge is renowned for the timeless beauty of its landscape and the serene tranquillity of its setting. Nestled amidst the acacia groves that border the crocodile-filled reaches of the Uaso Nyiro River, Serena Safari Lodge Samburu stands centre-stage to miles of lion-stalked grasslands, elephant-studded plains and wildlife-teeming bushes. The lodge is located 320km north of the capital, Nairobi, within the lands of the colourful Samburu pastoralists. It is also ideally placed for visits to the neighboring parks of Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserve.
Samburu Serena Lodge is truly a fantastic lodge; during your stay here you are guaranteed to see a crocodile basking in the sun, elephants outside our room (literally) and monkeys playing by the swimming pool, the monkeys were great fun to watch, they take sips of water from the swimming pool and you were always left wondering what they would do next. The swimming pool is lovely, towels are always provided and there is plenty of sun beds provided.
There are many lounging areas that are just wonderful to sit and relax, there are even a few outlets, so if you bring your laptop, you can plug in. It is nice to come back and take a look at all the great photos you got each day, while having a glass of wine or a beer and munch on the finger foods they set out each evening before dinner. Chefs are excellent, cooking various meals in the heat; food is pretty good buffet style food with lots of choice
Samburu National Reserve - Samburu National Reserve lies on the fringes of the vast and arid desert once known as the Northern Frontier District, whose heat-scorched scrublands extend all the way to the jade-green waters of Lake Turkana and beyond. Physically dramatic, the 104 sq kilometer landscape of the Reserve features rocky battlements, craggy scarps, dry river beds and fallen boulders rising out of the thorn scrub against a backdrop of the far-distant hills and the great red table mountain known as Lololokwi.
As for wildlife, Samburu provides one of the few sanctuaries in Kenya for the endangered Grevy's zebra, the rare beisa oryx and the blue-shanked Somali ostrich whilst large herds of elephant roam the gaunt hills during the day before returning to bathe on the banks of the river in the evening.
