Black spot also can be found on the fruit, petioles and canes.
When left uncontrolled, black spot will cause the rose bush to prematurely drop all of its leaves. The rose bush will be weakened and cane dieback in the following year could be severe.
Any diseased leaves that fall to the ground should be raked up and burned or hauled away. Do not put them into your mulch pile as it will help the fungus to spread.
Use a fungicide especially formulated for treating black spot should be applied in the spring as the new leaves are formed. The fungicide should be applied throughout the growing season until the first frost. Ideally, the leaves should always have a protective coat on them before it rains.
Rusty Spots (Rose Rust)
Rusty Spots or rose rust is caused by fungus from the Phragmidium family. Rose rust is able to survive the winter on the host plant and continue in the spring infecting the rose bush. The spores are spread by the wind.
The first sign of the fungus is on the underside of the leaves. It creates bright orange, powdery pustules. As the fungus continues to develop, on the top side of the leaf a yellowish to orangeish spots appear.
Collect all of the fallen infected leaves and remove any infected leaves from the bush. Discard the leaves; do not put them in your mulch bin as this will facilitate the spreading of the fungus.
Treat the entire bush with a fungicide especially formulated to combat rose rust fungus.
