Celebrating Her Majesty's Birthday in Grand Style

Every year, the 12th of August is celebrated in Thailand as a public holiday. This day has special importance as it is the birthday of Queen Sirikit, and also the Mother’s Day in Thailand. The festive occasion lasts for over five days and different types of celebratory events are held.

The queen was born in 1932, as Mom Rachawong Sirikit Kitiyakorn, and is the second queen from the Chakri Dynasty after she was wedded to King Bhumibol (Rama IX) in 1950. The country and the people received and accepted their Queen with great warmth and affection. The Queen has given wholesome support to the King and is equally respected by the people for her efforts towards the betterment of the country and its people. As a tribute to Queen Sirikit, the Thai government in 1970 made adjustments in the Thai national calendar so as to the concur the Queen’s birthday with the national mother’s day.

The Queen’s birthday festival is launched in the capital city with large displays and merriment, with flags depicting the Queen's colors, large portrayals of the First Lady of Thailand and fairy lights, lining the central parts of the chief streets on the Rattanakosin Island, culminating all the way to the Grand Palace. The city of Bangkok celebrates the Queen’s birthday in a grand manner- the celebrations begin on the 9th August and go on up till the 13th, and the peak intensity of the celebrations is around the 12th of August.

The early morning part on the 12th of August has spiritual importance. To pay tribute, devotion, and as a token of affection, several offerings are given to religious dignitaries in a special function at the Royal palace, after which all the people flock the city temples for subsequent religions functions. There are other entertainment activities in the city like music, folk dances, light-shows as a gesture of respect towards the Queen, and for the benefit and leisure of the natives.

The Queen's birthday festivities are just a few of the aspects you can experience in Bangkok, Thailand. If you are visiting Bangkok, hotel accommodation should be arranged prior to your travel. Sometimes, during festival periods, you may not be able to get a hotel room upon arrival. You can also check out the Bangkok service apartment selection for affordable accommodation with all the modern conveniences.
