Major wig manufacturers are informing retailers this week that wig costs are about to rise for a variety of reasons. Reasons such as rising costs of production and transport, devaluation of the American dollar, economic changes in Asia and increased global demand are cited as leading causes for the price increases.
Increased labor costs in Asian countries, where many wigs and hairpieces are manufactured are partially to blame, along with the devaluation of the American Dollar. The endless supply of cheap labor in China and India, which helped flood the world market with inexpensive goods, is starting to dry up, said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial. China's Yuan has been steadily appreciating against the Dollar at a rate of just less than 7% for the year. Faster appreciation in the Yuan is likely to help offset inflationary pressures from a weaker Dollar and rising global commodity prices.
Petroleum, which has been hovering just under $100 a barrel, is also partially to blame for increased costs in the wig industry. Aside from the petroleum used to transport the goods, it is also a major ingredient in the synthetic fibers which are used in the manufacture of many wigs and hairpieces.
Human hair wig and hairpiece prices are also rising, primarily because of an increased global demand driven by a greater acceptance and availability of human hair extensions on the market today. Human hair is considered a commodity and the cost of raw human hair fluctuates as all commodities do through a direct relationship with supply and demand.
On the brighter side, at least for retailers, is the news that human hair products and alternative hair are gaining greater acceptance in the general public. Higher demand translates into higher prices and generates higher revenue at the retail level.

Lady Gaga Tickets – Skeptics Call Greyson Chance a Gaga Plant
These days, all you need to do some viral marketing is a video camera and a little bit of talent. That's resulted in waves of viral campaigns in the past, and, sadly, it has also made Internet viewers all the more cynical as a result.
The latest target for that cynicism: Greyson Chance, a young teenager who appears in a YouTube video of himself playing Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi"—quite ably—before an enraptured audience at his middle school in Edmond, Okla., just outside Oklahoma City. The video was an instant hit on YouTube, spreading like wildfire through music blogs and landing young Greyson a deal with Interscope records.
Now the New York Daily News is asking whether the singer could become the next Justin Bieber, while Greyson has been speaking on the celebrity talk show circuit, making a prominent appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show recently. He proved to be a fairly engaging kid, laughing and talking to Ellen about songs he's written himself—one about a mom who passes away, and another about two girls (whom Greyson declined to name). Before performing for television audiences, Greyson even got a call from "Miss Gaga," who wished him well and said thanked him for covering her song.
But here's the rub: Is Greyson Chance for real? In this day and age, it's not beyond a marketing company to put a manufactured pop star up to this. But then again, it's not beyond Internet users to skeptically assume every teenage singer with an ounce of talent is a corporate marketing department plant.
In the case of Greyson, suspicions were aroused when people realized that Interscope—who offered him the record deal—is the same label that Lady Gaga is on. Further skepticism was stoked when an email leaked on to the net by a father who lives in Oklahoma City who points out that the school Greyson attends is co-ed; why do only girls show up in the video? Also, at one point you can see two girls over Greyson's shoulder who are clearly amazed by his abilities. Could the camera have been placed just so to capture two actresses?
If all this seems a tad bit paranoid, you may be right. After all, the father in question does not have kids at Greyson's school and wasn't at the performance; the video itself does seem shaky and amateurish. Then again, in the age of viral marketing, you can never quite tell what's real and what isn't.
In any case, there's more evidence right now that suggests your eyes (and ears) can be trusted. Greyson Chance may go on to be a talented new pop star, following in the footsteps of his idol, Lady Gaga. She started out at a rather young age, after all, and is now reigning supreme on the top of the charts.
