Here are some more information for Gold Plated:

Back in 1889, George Parker received his first patent on a pen. His inventions and improvements in the pen industry, are revolutionary and have changed the way that people write. The Parker Sonnet Pen series is just the next generation in an ongoing attempt to improve how pens can impact users.
This series has both fountain pens and roller ball pens, with prices ranging from $50 to over $300. Their unmatched quality and writing experience makes this series the best line to date. Not only are they attractive, they are comfortable to hold and have a beautiful appearance. This series not only looks great, the writing is the best in the industry.
Using the two hundred years of experience, the construction of this line is just outstanding. All of the nibs, in the Parker Sonnet Pen series, have gold plated or 23kt nibs. The design work on this important piece is very distinctive. The nib is the area where the ink flow is controlled.
This series comes in a variety of colors and styles. The Gold Plated line is not only functional, the appearance is spectacular. Each pen is coated in 23kt gold with solid gold nibs. They come with a pin striped design and with additional sizes available, every person, using this pen, will feel as if it were made exclusively for them.
The sleek contours and retro look truly speak volumes about the quality of these outstanding writing instruments. But as good as they look and feel, the performance is what sets apart from the competition. The ink flow is still controlled by a patented process dating back to almost the inception of the company. You will feel as though these pens are doing the work for you. And, with different sizes available, your perfectly fitting pen will feel as if it were made just for you.
The composite materials used will delight you while making your purchase. The Black Matte finish is overlaid with several coats of rich, black lacquer which results in a silky smooth feel. This color has both 23kt trim and nickel plated Palladium trims and will make you wish that you had been using it forever. The Stainless Steel series has an ultra soft high polish and comes with both the 23kt trim and the high shine nickel plated Palladium. There is also the spectacular Gold Plated line. These pens are coated in 23kt gold with solid gold nibs. This pin striped design is as elegant as a pen can get and the comfortable feel will likely be unmatched by any product.
Each Parker Sonnet Pen comes in a beautiful gift box with an extra ink cartridge and a converter, for those of us that still would like to use an ink bottle. All products in this line comes with a 2 yr guarantee. Purchase this pen and you will likely never buy another brand. Parker Pens has certainly done a great job with this series and your fingers and hands will be grateful that you found the Parker Pen Company.

Gold Plating Usage
A great deal of the gold plating that is done is performed on jewelry. An artist or jeweler may add gold plating to a portion of a piece of jewelry to add a secondary color to the design or cover the entire piece in gold, giving it the look of a solid-gold object. Like solid gold, a gold-plated piece of jewelry retains its gold color indefinitely and does not tarnish or rust. Of course, gold-plated jewelry is not nearly as valuable or costly as its solid-gold counterparts, though the physical appearance is much the same. Depending on the process used, gold-plated jewelry may eventually wear as the metal below the layer of gold begins to show through, ruining the illusion.
Electronics:
Electronics manufacturers also use gold plating for a very different purpose. One of the unique properties of gold is its excellent conductivity. For this reason, gold-plated electronics components are among the most reliable and highest quality in the industry. Computer semiconductors sometimes use gold plating, as do high-end audio cables that transmit sound at extremely high-quality levels.
Decoration:
Finally, gold plating is used for its aesthetic value, simply to embellish or decorate. For thousands of years, artists and architects have used gold plating to enhance their work, whether adding gold leaf to a painting, to the edges of pages in a book, to the capital of a marble column or to the cornice of a building. This use of gold plating serves as a reminder that gold has been considered sacred, valuable and, even, magical by many cultures throughout history.

Does anyone know of a dip or something to bring back the original colors in gold & silver plated things?
I have some items that are just priceless to me. There are some that are gold plated and some that are silver plated. I had heard there was some sort of color dip you can get to bring them back to the original colors? The things are mostly baby items from all 3 of my kids (picture frams etc.) so I will not get rid of them. I would just like to bring them back to their original color, or as close as I can.
is the plate falling off or is it tarnished? use an polish if its just tarnish -- the dips are kind of hard on plate. you can have things replated too.
