If Gold Leaf worth anything or is it fools gold?
I want to by a vial of gold leaf flakes, the vial is about 2 inchs tall.
If i get someone to melt the gold leaf down and turn it into a thin chain or some coins, would they be worth anything?
The vials that I've seen (and sold) of that size would be approx. 1/1000 oz. Imagine, 1000 vials to be one ounce of gold! All gold is worth something, but sometimes by visual it takes more than you would think. It's almost like an optical illusion, there's not as much there as it looks. Each sheet is approx. 1/100,000 inch thick.
Imagine a penny ran over on a railroad track. Looking at the flat side of it makes it look huge - the side view super little, but the weight is still there. Same with the gold. You're seeing it from the flat view instead of the side and it looks like a lot, but really it isn't.
If you melt down your vial of gold you might (if you're lucky) get a piece about the size of a grain of fine salt.
Gold leaf vials are sold for souvenir purposes only. It is pure gold but would take alot of it to have the weight. I agree with zynr above in regards to volume and space. If you take an average brown paper lunch bag and filled it with gold leaf pieces of the same kind your vial is made of, the gold would weight about 1/4 ounce, the bag would probably weigh double that or more.
