What are the statue of limitations in south carolina for items?

One of my girlfriends husbands was engaged before they met and he had given the girl a ring in 1996 he stopped making payments on it because they broke up it went on his credit report and came off his credit report in 2003. Now there is a collection agency calling saying they are going to take him to court for court fees and the remaining balance. If he does not pay in the next 48 hours here is the kicker they will not send him a bill stating this information.
