Be careful when feeding your Koi. Even if you buy the best Koi fish food, if you feed too much of it you will ruin the water quality in your Koi pond and make your fish sick!
Koi make ammonia from the food they eat. In fact some people even refer to them as ammonia machines. The reason for this is because of the quantity of food that they will eat. Being voracious eaters they will consume almost anything in their path!
- The ammonia that they excrete is made in several different ways:
- The digestion process (which includes both feces and urine)
- Respiration (introduces ammonia through their gills)
- Uneaten food (which will decompose into several chemicals which includes ammonia)
- Sediment from the bottom of your pond (includes feces, dead leaves, plant material from within your pond and other dead organisms)
Even though you may feed the best Koi fish food to try and keep your fish healthy, if you do not closely monitor your pond water and keep your Koi pond meticulously clean you will have sick fish. Water quality is the single biggest factor in Koi illness.
There are ways to calculate how much ammonia is generated by your Koi food. It will not be exact but will give a close estimate. It is based on the weight of food fed daily and the percentage of protein in the food.
By multiplying the weight of the food by the percentage of protein in the food and then by the percentage of Nitrogen in the protein (typically 16%) you will find the weight of atomic Nitrogen going in the water.
Then if you know the volume (and thus the weight) of water in your pond you can find the pm of Nitrogen.
Nitrogen creates ammonia and ammonia creates nitrite.
Each day, in a typical pond 1.9 ppm of ammonia and up to 5.2 ppm of nitrite is produced. If you measure the amount of ammonia and nitrite actually present (by testing your pond water), the difference is the amount "digested" by the bacteria daily.
If there are no bacteria present in your pond to digest the ammonia and nitrite, and you make no water changes, then the ammonia concentration will rise by 1.9 ppm per day and the nitrite by up to 5.2 ppm per day.
If this happens your Koi will die rather quickly due to the toxicity of ammonia and nitrite. After only a week or two of living in water with over 20 ppm of ammonia or nitrites most of your Koi will die off and any that are still alive will have Columnaris and Aeromonas infections and worse.
So make sure to keep the beneficial bacteria levels up in your pond and test your pond water regularly. If your water quality is not up to snuff it won't matter if you are feeding the best Koi fish food!
