I remember when I was younger and in elementary school we did a little project where we each wrote down what our favorite color was. The teacher then told us about different traits associated with those colors, and different things it might suggest about us because of the colors we picked.
The point of the exercise was more to let us know that colors could represent certain emotions, or certain ideas. It certainly made me look at colors in a new way at the time, and looking at them today, I see all sorts of different potential when it comes to marketing.
There are certain elements of color that I think people look at all the time. There’s a reason why power suits are usually going to be red, and environmentally friendly products are going to have a green motif. Different times of the years bring with them a focus on different colors, and this helps bring people out and form stronger connections with them.
I mention all of this because if you’re going to be advertising with a lot of colorful images, you would do well to know what those colors represent.
Let’s say you decide to print postcards and you want to make them easy to see in that pile of mail. Full color postcards are always going to stand out far more than a plain black and white one, so why wouldn’t you go for colorful images?
The thing to consider is whether or not you end up using the wrong type of color for the message you’re trying to send. Some of these decisions might be a little more obvious. You aren’t likely to want to use a lot of black when advertising an upbeat sale, but then, if you have a Halloween sale then black, orange, or brown might be just the thing you need to set the tone.
If you want quick action on the part of the person reading why not go with red to make them feel more energetic about it? A winter sale will likely call upon combinations of blue and white, or maybe you want to do just the opposite and avoid cold colors by going for yellow or orange instead. That way you can encourage a feeling of warmth when the temperature is cold outside.
All of these are going to affect the person who is looking at your advertisement, and alter their opinion of what they’re reading. Knowing this not only lets you avoid using the wrong colors, but also helps to further push your message and increases your rate of success.
Before you print postcards, or put up posters, or hand out flyers make sure that you’ve put a lot of thought into the colors you’re going to use for them.
