It's not possible to talk about wool and not think of cashmere. With its silky, luxurious texture and soft hue, cashmere ranks as one of the most popular types of wool all over the world. Actresses have graced television and movie screens wearing a variety of clothing made out of cashmere throughout the years, proving that it will never go out of fashion and will always be in every woman's must-have list.
From warm sweaters to bohemian scarves, cashmere garments are considered timeless, tasteful, and elegant. Wear them to occasions -whether casual or intimate -and you'll find that you'll stand out in sleek comfort. This is why the popularity of cashmere has only grown with the years.
Though it has been accorded much acclaim and praise, cashmere is actually the fur of the humble Kashmir goats, often harvested during their respective molting seasons. Kashmir goats can be found in China, India, Tibet, and Iran -but are primarily bred in Mongolia.
In fact, history tells that rulers from centuries past have gifted their loved ones with cashmere garments -owing to the beauty of the wool and the status it accorded because of its high value.
Due to cashmere's popularity; however, Americans have also jumped right in and started breeding their own cattle. What actually adds to the cashmere's price is the fact that it takes one Kashmir goat four to five years to shed enough fur to make just one garment. It is no wonder that people who collect garments made out of cashmere treat these articles with utmost care.
Cashmere wool can either be knit or woven to form various garments. Not only are such clothing highly exquisite to look out, they also provide much warmth during cold weather.
Cashmere garments are considered really chic gifts, whether they are given to the young and old, those who favor vintage or modern ways of dressing, as well as people with different lifestyles.
Just as there are many ways to design clothes made of cashmere, you'll find that this type of wool also varies in cost, depending on which part of the Kashmir goat the fur came from.
The best quality often comes from the throat and underbelly, and therefore garners the higher price. The lesser quality, which is still actually good, comes from the Kashmir goat's legs and back -and this is, logically, less expensive.
Whatever the quality, cashmere fibers can be fashioned into dresses, capes, scarves, sweaters, hats, mittens, shawls, and even blankets! There is a wide array of articles to choose from, and cashmere lovers claim that with proper care and handling, cashmere articles are the ultimate keepsakes.
Truth be told, even as more and more people purchase the latest designs, avid vintage collectors are also on the prowl for the more intricate designs of the past. Cashmere is considered timeless, and when knitted and woven in good taste, often provides an air of sophistication for the wearer.
Proper cleaning for knitted cashmere garments involve gentle hand-washing, while woven ones must be dry cleaned. Keep these garments in areas of normal temperature.
Make sure you store them in a dry place, so that they will not be ruined by any moisture. Consider your cashmere garment as an heirloom, and treat it as you would any treasured keepsake.

A Unique Boutique Hotel In Lhasa Tibet China
Lhasa China isn't everybody's idea of a vacation destination although Lhasa remains one of the most apparently remote mysterious, and even romantic places on earth. Once completely inaccessible it still isn't easy to get to, and then when you do, there is the question of where do you find a decent Lhasa Hotel.
The House of Shambhala could well be the perfect answer, and whilst it may not be the perfect example of a luxury boutique hotel it nevertheless by anyone's standards it is a unique small boutique hotel only recently opened in Lhasa Tibet, now of course in China. It is certainly vastly preferable to the faceless Chinese hotels to be found in Lhasa.
The House of Shambala is quite unlike anything that most people have ever seen in terms of it being an hotel.
It is situated in the Barkhor area in the historic heart of old Lhasa, and it looks like nothing at all as you enter off the street. In fact you will wonder if your guide has brought you to the right place as you pass a row of prayer wheels, then suddenly you find yourself in a traditional Tibetan Lhasa House which has quite obviously been lovingly restored, and turned into a real funky boutique hotel
The House of Shambalha is the kind of house where a nobleman would have lived, and is three storeyed, built around a courtyard, with prayer wheels and a shrine in the lobby.
There are 10 bedrooms and each is different from the other in size and design, painted in gold, saffron, crimson, or cinnamon, and filled with hand painted antiques, meditation chairs, yoga mats, furry white rugs, and exquisite Buddhist paintings. The whole thing has a real sort of Medieval feel to it, with the stone walls and wooden floors. The pillows and lampshades have the eyes of Buddha and all the nooks and crannies have yak butter lamps throwing shadows and emphasising the medieval feel to the place.
The beds are raised onto a Chinese style platform which just goes to emphasise the whole traditional feel of the place.
The ensuite bathrooms have stone walled showers, heat lamps which are needed and fragrant Tibetan soaps.
If you can, book an upper floor room because they get more of the sun, or alternatively if you want privacy there are two rooms which form their own courtyard, with their own separate staircase.
The view from the roof of the House of Shambhala, whilst sipping a local cocktail and watching some local dancers is absolutely breathtaking, and is just one of the things to make this a unique luxury boutique hotel. The second of course is the position astride a lane deep in old Lhasa Tibet.
Unexpectedly the rooms are warm even with snow on the ground, and there is unlimited hot water.
The restaurant has great food, a mixture of Indian, Tibetan, Chinese and Oriental with absolutely stunning tikka. Surprisingly the yak meat is delicious and well worth trying.
The Spa next door has a wonderful soaking tub, and you can have a superb massage to round of a day spent wandering around Lhasa.
The staff are all friendly and very willing, although their understanding of English is less than perfect, but this is Lhasa after all!
If Lhasa Tibet China is somewhere you want to go, then the House of Shambhala is the best place to stay, very comfortable and ideally situated to see old Lhasa.

Shangri-La, Yunnan Province, China
Referencing the book The Lost Horizon , the P.R.C. changed this town’s name to Shangri-La (originally called Zhongdian) in order to attract tourism. We arrived after a long, long sleeper bus ride from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province.
