real lilies or real roses please me.
These but adorn the trite and common gardens
their flesh
accords me bitterness, fatigue and pain
their perishable beauty bores me
give me but artificial flowers- glories of porcelain
and metal
that never wither and never rot, whose forms will
never age.
Flowers of an exquisite garden in another land
where Rhythms, Theories, and Ideas dwell.
Flowers I love created out of gold and glass,
trustworthy gifts of trustworthy art,
and dyed in hues more beautiful than nature's
with mother of pearl and with enamel wrought,
with ideal stalks and leaves.
They draw their grace from wise and purest Taste;
nor did they sprout unclean from dirt and mire.
And if they lack aroma, we'll pour them
fragrances,
we'll burn before them myrrh of our sentiments.
what is the theme?
It appeaes to be about somebody who is distrustful of physical (nature's) beauty. Use of Narcissus - hero renowned for beauty and a flower used to lure Peresephone away from her fellows so Hades couldabduct her - and other flowers that will eventually die is her saing she shant be lured by a facade that will with and die into 'dirt'.. Its like saying: I'm beautiful tonight, so come away with me, bbut in the morning my mask will part and I'll be some hideous monstrosity. The art part seems to literally be abou art, or at least intelligence or mental ideals, as its qualified by 'Rythms, Theories and Ideas. Author obviously believes that art (if it indeed be art, or Ideas etc.) is crafted from a 'cleaner' mind - it isnt grown in dirt only to flower and then die back into dirt. Finally, author states about Myrrh - burning of flowers for incense - saying; if this 'art' - or whatever - isnt celebrated as beauty then we shall make it so (sort of 'sing its praises to the rafters').
Overall: Its about the imortality of natures beaut, of which the author is distrustful, against her 'art' / ideas, which will endure anc can be made 'pretty' if we 'burn them myrrh' - celebrate them
