Encaustic Glass

Today's Victorian period tiles are based directly on bonafide 19th century patterns, most popularly, mosaic, geometric and floral. These Victorian patterns can also be found in arts and crafts specialty shops. Get acquainted with varying tile makes prior to laying Victorian floor tiles, from quarry to limestone, slate, porcelain, onyx, marble, travertine, unglazed stone, glass, vitrified clay, ceramic and granite. As well, determine the surface finishing from satin, glossy, matte, glass, metallic, encaustic and textured. Victorian tiles can be used indoors or outdoors in versatile ways such as in a kitchen, foot path, vestibule, fireplace, veranda, breezeway, conservatory, swimming pool and outside steps.

It is easy to find retail and wholesale stores capable of grouping their tiles to follow customized patterns. Victorian floors contain different forms and sizes of tessellated tiles made to fit together. Commence laying Victorian floor tiles by making sure the base floor is in its best state for tiling. Adhesives will not adhere if there is wax, grease and oil so eliminate those using a cleaning agent. Pound loose nails back into place so they are not protruding from the boards. Be fastidious, and if you deem the floor in bad shape, it would be easier to simply board it again.

Do not be tempted to start tiling from the wall. You should begin at the center of the space to be tiled, envisioning it as a perfect square with four sides. Obtain the middle of every two sides opposite each other and connect them with a line drawn on the floor. The intersection of the two lines is the center. Verify that it is correct by metering 3 inches from the center to one line and 4 inches to another line perpendicular to the first. The right angled 3 and 4 inch lines should be exactly 5 inches apart.

Before applying adhesives, lay one row of loose tiles from the center to one edge. Be sure there are no less than 2 inches between the last tile and this edge. If there are, adjust the center half a tile towards that wall, reducing the row by 1 tile. Finally, you can start laying Victorian floor tiles for real. As always, start from the center and cover one fourth of a room each time. Tile cement would usually take 15 minutes to dry to the required viscosity, or when it no longer sticks on fingers but is still gooey.
