China's first imperial Dynasty was the Qin Dynasty. The Qin Dynasty had unified the Chinese warring states by conquest, but their empire became unstable after the death of the first emperor Qin Shihuang. In 209BC, the last period of Qin, because of the harsh government decrees and heavy taxes, Chen Sheng and Wu Guang launched an uprising which was put down but paved the way for more rebellion.
In 206BC, Xiang Yu from the state of Chu, defeated the main force of the Qin's army at the Battle of JuLu. Together Liu Bang and Xiang Yu overthrew the Qin Dynasty however both want to become the emperor and so a war broke out between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang. This war decided who would become emperor of China and it lasted for 4 years. Although Xiang Yu was a capable commander, Liu Bang defeated him at the battle of Gai Xia.
In 202BC, Liu Bang made himself Emperor and established the Han Dynasty. It was the first powerful and stable dynasty in Chinese history.
The Western Han was a strong and prosperous period in the Han Dynasty, with a fast development of its politics, economy and culture.
After ascending to the throne, Liu Bang drew a lesson from the destruction of the Qin Dynasty; he renewed old laws and rite. In agriculture, he encouraged production, reduced conscript labor and cut many taxes. In politics, he initially gave noble titles and kingdoms to helpful ministers, such as Han Xin, Peng Yue, Yin Bu. Then once the dynasty had been stabilized, he abolished their titles and executed them with many different crimes. At the start of this Dynasty because of long-term wars, the nation was weak. After Liu Bang was defeated in Bai Deng when he led his army to attack the Huns, Liu Bang adopted the 'Peace-making Marriage' policy to pacify the invasion of the Huns.
When Liu Bang was alive, he wanted to appoint his son Ru Yi as his successor, but ministers and Empress Lv Zhi opposed him. After Liu Bang' death, Liu Ying inherited the throne and was named Emperor Hui. The Empress Lv Zhi killed Ru Yi and appointed her relatives to powerful position, which resulted in a revolt.
After the revolt, Liu Qi was made emperor by the ministers, and was named Emperor Wen. Liu Qi continued to follow Liu Bang's policy. This led to a stable period, the economy prospered, and the people lived happy and peaceful lives. The period was named the enlightened administration of the 'WenJing period'.
When Liu Che, the son of Liu Qi, took over the throne, named Emperor Wu, he carried out a series of reforms in politics, culture, military and diplomacy, which made the Han Dynasty very powerful. Emperor Wu was eager to pursue greatness and success and went on many conquests to expand China.
In the late period of Emperor Wu, there was a very famous palace coup named the 'Gu Zhong Disaster'. The prince Liu Ju and the empress Wei Zifu were forced to commit suicide.
After Emperor Wu's death, his eight-year-old son, Liu Fuling inherited the throne, becoming Emperor Zhao because of his young age, Shang Guanjie, Jin Richan and Huo Guang worked as his assistants. In 80BC, Shang Guanjie was killed and Huo Guang maintained all the powers for the young emperor.
After Emperor Zhao died of natural cause, Liu He, the grandson of Emperor Wu, took over the throne. LiuHe planned to execute Huo Guang to centralize all the power in one person however Huo Guang managed to exile him instead and appointed Liu Bingyi the Emperor, the great-grandson of Emperor Wu.He was named Emperor Xuan.
In 73BC, Huo Guang returned all the power of the Emperor to Emperor Xuan. Through a series of reforms in policy and economy, the Han dynasty prospered. This period was named 'Zhao Xuan Zhong Xing'.
After Emperor Xuan's death, Liu Shi came to the throne, and was named Emperor Yuan and this started the gradually declined of the Western Han Dynasty. Emperor Yuan was said to be delicate and too kind, which made the emperor's power fall into the hands of the eunuchs and the empress's relatives.
Emperor Yuan's son, the future Emperor Cheng was addicted to wine and pretty women. He neglected state affairs and allowed the Han dynasty to continue to decline. After Emperor Cheng died of wine, Liu Xin, the grandson of Emperor Yuan, came to the throne, he was named Emperor Ai. During his rule the power of the eunuchs and the empress's relatives grew stronger.
History claims that Emperor Ai was a homosexual and he bestowed many favours on Dong Xian, a male minister. When Emperor Ai died he had no children so Emperor Ping, the nephew of Emperor Cheng became emperor however Emperor Ping was just a puppet under Wang Mang's(The empress's Brother). When Emperor Ping started to grow up, Wang Mang had Emperor Ping killed and made RuZi Emperor, but Wang Mang held the power of the Emperor. In 9AD, Wang Mang forced Emperor RuZi to abdicate, and established a new dynasty. So ending the Western Han Dynasty ended.
