Chinese Pattern Lantern

Chinese paper lanterns, dating back to 230 BC, symbolize long life and good luck.

During the Lantern Festival which originated around this time, the Chinese people would gather and raise their lanterns in an attempt to find their deceased loved ones thought to be passing over on their journey to heaven.

Today the event has grown to include the creations of expert lantern-makers who utilize unusual materials to show off their artistry.

Over the years, the Chinese paper lantern has been used to mark significant life events such as births, deaths, and weddings. It has also been used for military communications, and as a show of wealth: the bigger the lantern displayed outside the home, the richer the occupant.

In modern times, we know the Chinese lantern as a quaint and beautiful decoration that brightens our special events and celebrations.

Pingyao, one of the famous four ancient cities in China, is endowed with a lot of places of historical interest. With quite a long history, Pingyao is home to many amazing historical sites and Pingyao's local cuisine is renowned for its diverse style and delicious taste. Pingyao attracts every visitor according to its special lingering charms of an ancient city.

Ming and Qing Street

The Ancient City of Pingyao was the territory of Emperor Yao and it was first built during the period of Emperor Xuan. About in 1370, in order to protect the ancient city from invading by enemies, the tall Ancient City Wall was set up. The ancient wall is 6.4 kilometers long and 12 meters tall, and it was repaired in Ming dynasty and in Qing dynasty basing on the former shape. Above the City Wall, there is an inscription of "The Ancient City of Pingyao" which is written by China's former president, Jiang Zemin. The inscription always attracts people to take photos with. Seeing the sunset in the grand City Wall is enjoyable, too.

The ancient city of Pingyao still maintains the original appearance. Because of the set up of Pingyao town, the first original bank Ri Shengchang Bank was set up, too. The appearance of Ri Shengchang Bank marks that people needn't use Biaoju (the ancient security company to protect the treasure in the business road) any more. It plays a significant role in financial history of China because it marks the new financial industry's formation and development.

So far, the walls, streets, stores, residential areas and temples of Pingyao town remain good. The architectural pattern and style characteristics change a little. So they are live specimens for Chinese people to research the politics, economics, culture, military, and art and so on in ancient time. Now, the ancient city of Pingyao has convenient traffic condition and sound service items. The department stores, restaurants, entertainments are here and there.

The Qiao Family's Mansion is an indispensable sight in your trip to Pingyao. It is an ancient quadrangle that a famous merchant Qiao Zhiyong lived. It has a traditional architectural style of Ming and Qing dynasties. This famous house proved the ups and downs of China at that time. The famous movie" Raise the Red Lanterns" is filmed here.
