If you're into pottery making, than you need to know that true Mata Ortiz pottery comes from the area in and around the village of Mata Ortiz, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Having noted that, there's certainly nothing wrong with picking up a few pointers on style and technique from the skilled craftsmen who create it.

The First Thing People Notice About Mata Ortiz Pottery

The very first thing that people notice when they first hold a piece of this amazing ceramic ware in their hands, is just how light it is. It's the actual walls of each piece. They're crafted very thin. The secret here is that no potters wheel is used. Rather, each piece is hand crafted by working up coils of clay.

Care Must Be Taken When Drying Your Piece

Now because the walls of each piece are so thin, careful consideration must be taken while each piece is drying. Any stems or spouts should be wrapped in plastic wrap, to insure that the entire piece dries in unison. A part that dries quickly and separately will be prone to breaking off.

Crafting Smooth Finishes and Complex Patterns

The artists who create these unique pieces also often spend a good amount of time working on the final finish of a piece. They do this with wooden spatulas and often simple instruments like knife tips are used to press complex patterns in their works.

You Don't Need a Modern Kiln for Pottery Making

Another item worth noting is that no modern kiln has ever been used by these traditional Mexican artists for their pottery making. Much like Japanese raku ceramic ware, Mata Ortiz pottery is fired in the same type and style of fire pit that their ancestors used hundreds of years before them.

Ceramic glaze.... how do I make it with minerals?

Hi I'm a senior at my high school, and I have to make a project that shows something I have taken from my High school career, so I want to glaze a ceramic piece I have made using diffrent minerals(pure rocks: talc, gypsum, dimaond, gold, olivine) I was wondering if any one had any glaze recipes made up of mostly organic materials.

I want to kind of create metamorphism in a kiln on my ceramic ware. please help if you can!

I am not sure what you want to do, you start out saying you want anorganic glazes then you switch to organic. Organic materials burn in a kiln, so they are not much used in glaze formulation and if they are used it is usually their mineral content which contributes to the glaze. But look into saggar firing, that's where you use organic material to color your pieces. The results vary a lot but can be very attractive.

If you want anorganic glaze recipes just google that term and you will find plenty, an example below.
