Here are some more information for Carved Delicate Snuff:
Carved Delicate Snuff

Snuff is powdered tobacco usually mixed with herbs and spices designed to be sniffed upwards through the nostrils. It has long been viewed a more 'gentlemanly' practice than actually smoking the tobacco. Snuff originated in America and became immensely popular in 17th century Europe. Like scent, special bottles were popularised to contain snuff, being usually ornate and often unique and ultimately one of today's most popular collectibles. Designed to carry in the pocket, most bottles are less than 3 inches long and an inch or two wide.

Many of the most beautiful and valuable snuff bottles were made in China and feature amongst eBay's highest priced specimens. Most Chinese snuff bottles resemble small vases with tiny stoppers and were frequently made from porcelain, ivory, horn, glass or bronze, and overlaid with delicate hand painting or encrusted with precious stones. The best were hand carved from porcelain and gemstones, or carved and hand hollowed from glass and worth many times more than their modern day glass blown counterparts.

There's a good following for modern snuff bottles so don't turn a blind eye to what's available from craftworkers and glass makers. You'll find modern snuff bottles will sell well outside their area of origin but be careful not to confuse old with new in your listings. Some enthusiasts collect snuff bottles regardless of age; others want antique bottles aged one hundred years or more.

Although the majority of quality snuff bottles were and still are made in China, some better designs also came from Japan, usually of carved ivory or hand applied lacquer.

The Chinese developed a technique of 'inside painting' their snuff bottles to prevent outside decorations being chipped or discoloured when knocked or subject to strong light or heat. Paint was applied using matchstick shaped bamboo sticks with a hooked end to reach inside the bottle, a painstaking process that took weeks or months, sometimes years.

The best of Chinese and Japanese creations are rare and very expensive especially bearing the artist's signature, as you'll see from the following recent eBay results:

* Two Antique Enamelled Oriental Snuff Bottles fetched $10,000. These were hand painted types and went at Live Auction.

* A snuff bottle decorated enamel on copper (Japanese I think) went for $4750.00, also at Live Auction. What surprised me here was the surprising lack of detail given about the bottle but the pictures were great and no doubt lifted an otherwise very poor listing.

* Two 19th century jade snuff bottles made in China fetched $4250.00 and $2,100.00 respectively.

Numerous other Chinese 18th and 19th century bottles fetched hundreds of dollars apiece and, in a long list of Oriental snuff bottles, just one failed to reach its reserve and remained unsold.

Other Things to Know About Snuff Bottles

* Snuff bottles rarely go unsold on eBay and often fetch silly-high prices. They really are the kind of thing you can buy, at almost any price high or low, add your mark up and get what you ask, and maybe a whole lot more. Remember that, if two people bid to a specific price at local auction you're bound to find one more person in this great big world willing to pay just a little bit extra for the item, maybe a great deal more.

* The most expensive snuff bottles are made from porcelain from the late 1600s to mid-1700s.

* The smaller the hole in the top of the bottle, generally speaking the better the quality.

* Another major sign of quality is the size of the interior, bigger generally being more expensive than smaller hollows.

* 'Overlay' is a description applied to many valuable bottles and indicates another colour, material or design has been applied over the basic bottle. The more intricate and valuable the coating, the more expensive the bottle is likely to be.

* Quality of carved bottles made from glass, ivory or other materials, lies in the detail and intricacy of the carving and quality of craftsmanship.

* Snuff bottles had separate cap and sometimes their own small spoon. A bottle with top and spoon intact is worth at least two to three times more than snuff bottle minus partner items.

* When buying, compare bottle to cap and spoon, check finer details and design. Very often parts from separate incomplete bottles are partnered, sometimes innocently to create a usable specimen, often fraudulently to maintain value.

* If you can't tell Japanese from Chinese creations call them 'Oriental' instead.

* Keep bottles free from strong light and heat, both of which cause materials to sweat and colours to fade, as well as leading to unsightly cracks in fine layers of paint and other delicate overlay.

* Look for tiny cracks and abrasions in glaze and coating, avoid any that are badly damaged. Snuff bottle collectors are finicky, and even tiny irregularities can deplete value considerably.

* Be on guard against fake 'porcelain' and 'ivory' snuff bottles which are commonly made from resin, hard plastic or bone. At auction look for ways to confirm items are old, such as letters or receipts relating to whatever is offered.

* Disregard ivory snuff bottles, especially modern creations. Ivory is commonly imported illegally and collected in truly inhumane manner which few people find acceptable, even the most enthusiastic snuff bottle collectors. Some countries tolerate the trade of vintage ivory, in others ivory of any age or form is banned from being sold or entering the country. So you could find yourself selling an ivory snuff bottle only to find it seized by the authorities at the buyers' end.

Arsenal wins, but with care will travel to Udine

FT WRAP: It looked like all the negativity and nervousness that has surrounded Arsenal these last few weeks had been lifted by Theo Walcott's fourth minute goal. But the terror was hiding not very far beneath. Udinese played on the front foot for much of the game and were unlucky to get no reward for it. They could even have left trailing by two but for a fantastic save from Handanovic at the death to deny Walcott another. Arsenal travel to Italy with a lead but with their Champions League hopes still precariously balanced.

On my blog you can find interesting things related to football [http://www.consumersuggest.org/] also you can  find more topics about newest developments in football.

90+3 min: And that's time. After promising an avalanche of goals we have to make do with just the one.

90+2 min: Amero almost dares Koscielny to foul him out by the corner flag and the Arsenal defender falls for it. He's a lucky boy though as Di Natale tries a shot from an impossible angle and doesn't get close.

90 min: Incredible save from Handanovic. Gervinho's tireless running finally carved something out for Arsenal as a reverse pass put Walcott in on goal. He thought he had scored as he cut the controlled effort back across the seemingly stranded goalkeeper but Handanovic threw himself to his left and just managed to get a hand to it and turn the ball round the post.

88 min: Frimpong shows strength and energy to carry the ball deep in to Udinese territory. The cut back is then sent forward for Walcott to contest it on the penalty spot. He goes to ground under two challenges and half heartedly appeals for a penalty that was never going to come.

86 min: Udinese seem to have shot their bolt and Arsenal are finishing the stronger here. It wouldn't be an accurate reflection of the balance of play but the home side could nick one at the death here and make that trip to Italy a lot more comfortable.

84 min: Confusion reigns. Gervinho was sent free in the box before a fantastic tackle robbed him of the ball. His momentum took him over and to ground. A few Arsenal fans wanted a penalty. More thought they'd got one when the referee actually pointed to the six yard box for a goal kick. Temporarily outraged Udinese players protested before it was all cleared up and smiles broke out.

82 min: Walcott is still full of running as other around him on both sides start to lose their legs. A dink over the top saw him wrestle for position and win it but just as he was trying to pick the ball in to the middle a delicate shove put him out of his stride.

81 min: But so might the visitors. Pinz has a dig from distance. His reaction to it fizzing wide suggested it was close. It wasn't.

79 min: There are a lot of worried faces inside the Emirates and Udinese have had the better of the second half but with not long to go Arsenal are still in front. A second now would put them in a great position. It doesn't look likely but you suspect they will have at least one chance before the game's out.

77 min: Free kick from wide right, level with the penalty spot for Arsenal sees men fall to ground all over in the box but the referee is unmoved.

75 min: Good running from Walcott through the middle before releasing Gervinho. With four Udinese defenders in front of him, though, it looked a forlorn task but he got his head down and surged in to the box. The shot was inevitably blocked but he got a corner out of it and gave Arsenal something to build on at least. Slim pickings for the home side at the moment.

73 min: Frimpong makes an instant impact – on the heels of Udinese players. Two free kicks given away, the second in shooting range. Fantastic curling shot up and over the wall from Di Natale was going in before Szczesny flung himself across the goal to make a fine two-handed save.

72 min: And that's Rosicky's last contribution. Off he goes with a grimace on his face – on comes Frimpong with a broad grin.

71 min: Ramsey gets on the ball again and looks lively. His square pass to Rosicky gives the Czech a shooting chance but his outside of the boot effort is well over.

69 min: Glorious vision and passing from Ramsey. His slide rule pass dissected the entire Udinese back line to release Walcott. it worked in the opening minutes but not now, as Walcott's attempted dink past the goalkeeper to the far post ends with an apologetic scuff of a shot. Still, shows that there are chances to be carved out there if Arsenal keep their composure and pick their passes.

67 min: Can't be long before Chamakh is replaced by Bendtner. If Arsenal hadn't been forced to make two changes already you suspect the change would already have been made. Chamakh wanders offside when looking straight down the line and he looks either short of fitness or confidence or both.

65 min: Armero flashes one not too far over as the home support takes a collective breath.

63 min: Walcott gets a lucky break in a midfield challenge and Ramsey gets on to it and surges in to space but he doesn't have the support and runs down a dead end. Arsenal have been on the back foot for most of this half but when they get their passing game going there is space to attack. The problem lies with the two men up top. Chamakh isn't having any sort of impact and Gervinho, for all his energy and endeavour, doesn't seem capable of holding the ball up for long enough.

61 min: Best form of defence for Arsenal is attack. Walcott gets on the ball and attacks the box. Udinese are worried when he has the ball and rightly so, but this time his attempted cross is misplaced.

60 min: Jenkinson, who has looked confident and assorted in what little he's had to do so far, beaten for strength on the Arsenal left allowing a fizzing low cross to be flashed across the face of goal. Nothing from it this time but the Italians look dangerous every time they go forward.

58 min: Koscielny penalised for what looked like a decent challenge on the centre spot which gives Udinese chance to make their first change. Off goes Neuton, still suffering from that Sagna challenge, to be replaced by Pasquale. All adding to the stop start feel to the game.

56 min: So after a fantastic start troubled times for Arsenal here. Two changes in defence might unsettle them and at a time when Udinese are looking strong. Play a bit disjointed at the moment and you can feel the tension returning to the stands.

53 min: Trouble for Neuton who took a knock as Sagna challenged him robustly. Doesn't seem like the sort of player who worries about the rough and tumble of the game. Worse for Arsenal, though, Djourou, who only came on at the break, has a hamstring problem himself and on comes 19-year-old Carl Jenkinson – who was playing in the conference six months ago.

52 min: Visiting fans in good voice as Udinese enjoy a spell of pressure, the game being played in the Arsenal half. Djourou again has to take decisive measure to snuff out an attack at the expense of a corner which, thankfully for them, comes to nothing.

50 min: Gibbs went off due to a hamstring strain and it doesn't look like that will be the end of changes in the early part of the first half. Plenty of activity on the Arsenal bench just now.

48 min: A high pressing game from Udinese forces Koscielny in to turning the ball over and a sharp break feed Di Natale in the box. he looked odds on to score before taking a touch to steady himself and allowing Djourou – on as a half time substitute for Gibbs – to put in a sensational sliding block.

46 min: Undinese start the half at the same tempo they ended the first but Arsenal string a few passes together to take the early sting out of that pretty swiftly.

HT WRAP: A glorious start for Arsenal with a goal for Theo Walcott inside five minutes and for a short spell after it looked like they would go on and dominate the game. A very short spell. Udinese picked themselves up and dusted themselves down and ended up contributing to an open, compelling half. The Italians are direct without being agricultural, always looking to spring Di Natale free. They had their chances, too. But so did Arsenal. More goals to come in this one I suspect.

45 min: Arsenal try to launch the final attack of the match but are pulled up by the referee's whistle. The half comes to an end with honours even but Arsenal in front.

42 min: With no van Persie in the side tonight Arsenal seem a little confused as to what to do with a presentable free kick just outside the area. They elect to push it square to Vermaelen to have a crack. But disguise it as well as an elephant wearing a sombrero trying to blend in to the background of a Mexican restaurant. Blocked at source and a waste of a chance.

40 min: Arsenal fight for and win possession off Udinese but then waste their efforts by giving it straight back to them. Could have been costly as a ball was pinged in to the box to pick out a forward on the penalty spot but just too far behind to get any direction on the header. Warning signs all over now for Arsenal who you imagine are more eager to get to the break than their opponents.

38 min: Another ball for Di Natale to chase lofted over the back of Arsenal's defence. Law of averages states that at some point one of those is going to hit its mark and Arsenal will be in trouble. You suspect they will need at least one more goal to win this game tonight.

35 min: Skulduggery and conspiracy abound at the Emirates. Pat Rice turned round and looked at 'someone', says man on the spot Geoff Shreeves. Then another coach appeared, as if by magic, and instructions were sent on to the pitch by way of shouting words. Not sure who the 'someone' was, or if Rice was just stretching his neck, but the rules state that Wenger isn't allowed to have any contact with the bench until 15 minutes after full time. Just saying, them's the rules, that's all ...

33 min: Arsenal's 154th corner of the game. Chamakh meets it square and forces a decent save from the visiting goalkeeper but it wouldn't have counted anyway. Some pushing and shoving in the box saw to that.

31 min: Arsenal come forward again. The crowd urge Gervinho to shoot. He does. But it's blocked. The ball spills to Rosicky. the crowd urge him to shoot. He does. it's blocked. There is a theme developing here.

29 min: This game is more stretched than a pair of James Corden's skinny jeans. And much, much more pleasant an the eye. Terrific, if a touch sloppy, entertainment (the match I mean), it's almost like a Premier League ding dong.

27 min: Walcott gives Alan Hansen more ammunition to have a pop. He had as long as I've seen any player have to pick out a cross – other than from a corner – and ended up spooning it up and over everyone. Too much time to think, see

25 min: Arsenal turn attack in to defence in the blink of an eye. A corner should have been recycled but indecision between those in red allowed Armero to nick the ball and just run Forest Gump style straight through the Arsenal midfield and defence. He was one-on-one with Szczesny and really ought to have scored, though having run the full length of the field you could forgive him a tired effort. The ball looked to have spilt to an Italian before Song put in a decent block to snuff out the danger.

23 min: Sagna looks in a spot of pain after a meaty challenge from Neuton, whose early booking isn't holding him back. It was a legitimate challenge, Sagna just fell hard. He's all right now and Arsenal come again down the right, forcing another corner.

22 min: Gervinho is putting plenty in to this. He may as well, what with having a couple of Premier League games off coming up. It hasn't come to too much so far but he's worrying the Udinese defence enough to be effective to a degree.

19 min: There is a real contrast to how the two sides are getting forward. Arsenal playing the ball around and building relatively slowly, allowed to by Udinese sitting deep. Whenever Udinese go forward they look for the killer/Steve G hollywood pass as soon as possible. that's what is seeing the ball constantly turned over and the game skipping along at a fine tempo.

17 min: Di Natale tries a Karel Poborský skinning Peter Schmeichel style scoop up and over the defence and oh so nearly gets Isla in round the back. Udinese were the great entertainers of Serie A last season, we are being repeatedly told. On this evidence I can believe it.

15 min: This is actually a pretty decent game. And more open than you suspect either manager planned for. End to end would be pushing it but not by much. More you have a go then we'll have a go. Di Natale has a shoot on sight policy. But Serie's top goalscorer two years running probably has earned the right.

12 min: From the free kick Di Natale whips one up and over the wall but with the goalkeeper beaten when he really shouldn't have been – it wasn't travelling at any sort of speed – the ball came back off the crossbar. That calm, steady, comfortable opening for Arsenal already feels a long time ago ...

11 min: Walcott fouls Neuton who tells the referee how to do his job by waving the imaginary yellow card at him. The referee does as instructed an books Walcott. the books Neuton for his impedance.

09 min: It's not all sunshine and roses for Arsenal, mind. They do do a good line in self harm. First a certain goal, following a flick on at a corner, failed to materialise as Koscielny and Gervinho got in each other's way at the back post when no defender seemed interested in either of them. Then some sloppy handling of possession in midfield opened Arsenal up. If Asamoah had picked a pass sooner Di Natale would have been in. But he didn't, so he wasn't.

08 min: Neuton at left back is being left out to dry by his team-mates here. Virtually everything is coming down the Arsenal right and he's getting no help in dealing with Walcott's pace.

07 min: Francesco Guidolin, Udinese's coach, looks agitated as he prowls along the touchline. Wenger, presumably, looks calm and satisfied. By the cameras haven't looked that high up in the stands for a while to be sure.

05 min: That was far too easy for Arsenal. Udinese's plan was always to sit deep and play on the break but it's a plan that requires a touch more concentration than they showed there. Walcott again causes panic down the right but this time his cross is blocked for a corner.

 03 min: Arsenal 1 Udinese 0
How to settle nerves in three easy steps. First chip a delicate ball over the top for Ramsey to chase down the right hand channel. Second, have Ramsey send over an inviting low cross. Third, see Theo Walcott cushion a delicate touch past a helpless goalkeeper from five yards. Easy does it.

01 min: Arsenal start by knocking it around a bowling green of a pitch. Udinese's Ekstrand starts by clattering the first Arsenal player he sees with the ball and gets a yellow card in double quick time. It had the feeling of a pre-season friendly for all of 50 seconds there.
