BE BETTER THAN YOU ARE NOW- IT'S TIME TO GET MOTIVATED
ANOTHER YEAR ROLLS AROUND, AND ONCE AGAIN, WE'VE PROMISED OURSELVES THAT WE WILL BEGIN EXERCISING. We have good intentions. We've written our New Year's resolutions down on a piece of paper and put it up on the refrigerator to remind us everyday of what we are committing to. Time has passed and you have most likely given up on most, if not all, of the original resolutions.
First of all, realize that this is perfectly normal. Don't punish yourself if what you read is talking about you. Just make a decision to start a program that you can stick with, and then just START.
If you have as many good intentions as you have excuses for why you can't do it today, then maybe you should start thinking about exercise differently. Spring and summer are the perfect times of year to make it happen. It's always difficult to begin exercising, but once you get into a routine and make it a part of your life, you'll feel better about yourself and your life.
Remember that it's the little things that count. If you can make a commitment to fit it in, you will find a way to carve out a few minutes to improve your health and well-being. Here are some suggestions for how to fit exercise into your busy day:
• Park your car a mile or two from where you work and walk to your destination.
• Use stairs instead of elevators or escalators.
• Ride a stationary bike while you read the paper or watch the news on TV.
• Set realistic and measurable goals. Keep track of the small increments of progress you make and it will help you stay motivated for future exercise.
• Combine exercise with social activities. Find someone you can count on and hold each other accountable to exercise together on a consistent basis. Exercise is much more fun in pairs!
• Participate in an organized sport such as soccer, softball, or mall walking. This is a great way to break back in to a program of exercise in a team or a group setting.
• Schedule your workout in your calendar. All of us are "too busy" to exercise, so you must block it into your day and make yourself stick to the schedule until it becomes enough of a priority on its own.
• Add variety. Try swimming one day, jogging the next, and riding a bicycle the day after.
• Make your workout convenient, both the time of day and location. Get someone to watch your kids while you exercise, and then trade off and watch theirs for them.
• Start slow and easy to avoid injuries. Also, come in to our office for a full examination to make sure of the proper level of exercise to participate in.
• Make sure you have the proper clothing, shoes, and equipment.
• Exercise outdoors whenever the weather permits. This serves many purposes, but mainly it distracts your mind from the task at hand.
Consider the many health benefits related to exercise:
• Decreases your need for anti-hypertensive medication, if you are hypertensive. Nothing is more important to your health and well-being than lowering your blood pressure.
• Helps to retard bone loss as you age, thereby reducing your risk of developing osteoporosis. Research has proven that drinking milk and taking calcium is not enough to stop the loss of bone. It requires resistance exercise.
• Helps to relieve and prevent migraine headache attacks.
• Reduces your risk of endometriosis (a common cause of infertility).
• Reduces your level of abdominal obesity - a significant health risk factor. Who isn't interested in looking more fit and toning muscles that haven't been used for a while!
• Improves your decision-making abilities. Clarity of thinking is related to the circulation in the brain, and exercise is the number one stimulant of increased blood flow.
• Helps decrease your appetite - a short-term effect only, but every little bit helps. Am I right?
• Improves your pain tolerance and elevates your mood. This is important to many of you reading this article.
• Reduces workdays missed due to illness. Research has proven that exercise coupled with consistent Chiropractic care to improve the function in your spine and nervous system is the primary contributor to getting back to work sooner when illness or injury occurs.
• Enhances your muscles' ability to extract oxygen from your blood. Your energy level is determined by the amount of oxygen that is properly transmitted to your cells. Can anyone out there use more energy?
• Helps you to maintain an independent lifestyle.
• Improves your general mood and mental state.
• Improves your athletic performance. You pick the sport and a proper exercise program can enhance your skills many times over.
Do your best to put these into action. The information is worthless if it sits without being put to use. Are serious about your health? If you are, I will do everything in my power to help you achieve your health goals. Look for the other articles that I have written on various topics and pick the topics that most pertain to what you need at this time in your life. If you wear out your body, where are you going to live? This life is a one shot deal, so make the most of it while you still have the chance! Don't look back 10 years from now and suffer from the "I wish I would have" syndrome. Only YOU can help YOU do the things that YOU already know need attention in your life and in your health. Begin today. You will be glad you did!

Turkey Carving The Easy Way
To someone who is just learning to cook, this topic may seem like one of the hardest meals you will ever have to prepare. Needless to say, if you’re having a turkey there’s usually company involved which means a number of hungry people are relying on you to prepare a great meal. This can be very intimidating. Luckily we have all the information you need, in order to ensure a great meal for you, your friends and your family.
In order to successfully carve a turkey, you will need to have the following pieces of equipment:
• One warm serving platter
• A pair of kitchen scissors
• An electric knife or a large slicing knife (you may want to choose a manual knife since they provide more control than electric ones)
• A small carving knife or fork for arranging and serving the meat
Now that you have the equipment you need to carve the turkey, follow these steps in order to become a turkey carving expert:
1. Leave the turkey to sit 20-30 minutes after roasting and before carving. This will make the meat moister and easier to cut.
2. After the turkey has sat for the time indicated above, transfer the turkey onto a cutting board; this is where you will begin carving the turkey.
3. Remove the Leg: To do this, hold the drumstick firmly with your fingers and gently pull the meat away from the body of the turkey. While doing this, cut through the skin between the leg and the body. Next, cut through the joint joining the leg to the backbone. Then separate the drumstick and thigh by cutting downwards through the joint, until the knife hits the cutting board.
4. Slicing the Drumstick (Leg) Meat: Once you have detached the leg from the rest of the body, you will want to slice the meat. Hold the drumstick in an upright position and turn the drumstick in a circular motion while cutting downwards. This will produce tasty slices of meat which are approximately equal size.
5. Slicing the Thigh Meat: When slicing thigh meat, you want to hold it close to the plate and secure it so it does not move. For best results when cutting thigh meat, make sure your knife is parallel to the bone and cut downwards towards the plate in slow, steady motions.
6. Slicing the Breast Meat: Make a deep cut into the breast of the turkey towards the body frame, as close to the wing as you can. Starting at the front of the turkey (about halfway up the breast) start cutting downwards, parallel to the cut you made to the wing. Only cut enough meat as you think necessary for the amount of people. Uncut meat will stay fresher longer.
7. Serve the Turkey: place all the slices of meat in an attractive manner on a large platter and serve to your guests.
