"Your life's meaning is the difference that it makes. If it doesn't make a difference, it has no meaning." -Lyndon Duke
Who is Lyndon Duke? Lyndon Duke, best known for his studies on the linguistics of suicide, Duke discovered during his studies that if you could understand suicide, you would also have developed an understanding for all human unhappiness.
Duke once said "When you are on your death bed, you will be asking 'What's different? What is different on this planet because I was here? 'If nothing is different, then you didn't make a difference. If you didn't make a difference, then your life had no meaning. That's all meaning is-the difference it makes. What doesn't make a difference has no meaning."
Lyndon had experienced exceptional success in life early on, and then, after a series of events, he had hit rock bottom; he had lost everything so to speak. One day as he lay face down on his living room floor- face first in the carpet not sure how to go on- he heard his neighbor mowing the yard. Above the sound of the growling lawnmower, he also heard the voice of his neighbor- the man pushing the lawnmower. His neighbor was singing as he mowed the yard.
In a flash, Duke realized what he wanted more than anything else. He wanted to experience a life so simple that he could mow the yard and sing at the same time. His new goal was to simply become an average person.
He started to think about the possibility of, having as a focus in life, the desire for a simple and comfortable life. This is a man who had been a highly intellectual University Professor. Lyndon decided that he wanted to become an average person, enjoying an average life. Eventually, he came to the understanding that life one's life did not have to be exceptional, and that an average person, living an average life every day, could make a big difference. Thus, an average person could have a life full of meaning.
Remember, Duke defined meaning as the difference that you make. Lyndon Duke made the differences he was able to make; he did not get hung up frustrated by the differences he would like to make but couldn't.
Duke knew something that many never figure out; anything we do we get better at doing. If we want to be better at making a difference, we can do so by simply making a point to consistently make a difference. The fact that human beings get better at whatever they do includes less desired states and emotions like misery and frustration. If we "practice" entering states of being miserable and frustrated often, we will get more proficient at that as well.
After having mastered becoming average (I know, somewhat of an oxymoron) Duke suggested that others who were interested simply get up each morning, willing to live out another average day. The following lyrics from Eagle's wild man, Joe Walsh, and his song "Ordinary Average Guy" may tell the story quite well:
We all live ordinary average lives
With average kids
And average wives
We all go bowling at the bowling lanes
Drink a few beers
Bowl a few frames
We're just ordinary average guys
Lyndon discovered that through linguistics of suicide that there was an expectation that every day, every moment, every event, had to be the most spectacular ever, or it meant something was wrong. Those who committed suicide most often had a set of "rules" about what makes a good day that made it almost impossible to fulfill. Over time, these people came to believe that they were deficient somehow.
Lots of stuff we would rather not have happen in our lives is going to happen- count on it! Interestingly enough, however, when you know and accept that ahead of time, when those things do happen, it does not pull the proverbial rug out from under your feet.
What would it be like for you to experience a series of happy average days? The next time you are convinced you are having a terrible day, ask yourself what you are comparing it to, or what rules you have for that particular situation and what would have to happen for you to call it "fun" or "successful".
Make it easy to have great days, and difficult to have "bad" days. Most people have it set up the other way around!

Sound Healing
Sound healing has its origins in the dawn of humankind. Perhaps, the first human infant was lulled to sleep by the sound of its mother’s heartbeat. What to speak of human beings, we can see in nature that even animals use sound as a form of healing for one another. Sound is indeed one of the most basic primordial features in nature itself.
Currently sound healing techniques are being used in patient therapies across the globe. One popular form is found in the use of what is termed “Tibetan singing bowls”.
Originally used by Buddhists for religious ceremonies, meditation support, prayer and trance induction, singing bowls are now employed as a form of sound healing. One way of doing this is for a facilitator to place singing bowls on various parts of the human body, such as the lower back (in cases of back pain), and strike the bowl with its accompanying “striker”, creating a sound that reverberates through the ether and also sends vibrations throughout the body of the recipient. This is said to affect the body, mind and spirit of the recipient at very deep levels. Even if you doubt all that, one this is for sure, this form of sound healing is very relaxing.
Another form of sound healing is done with a gong and a striker. For those of you old enough to remember “The Gong Show”, I don’t have to go into to much detail about that!
Currently there are several yoga centers that employ this method of healing by having their yoga students lay on the floor in shavasana and just relax and listen to the magical sounds that are created when the gong is struck at various points and in various degrees of intensity. Again, this is another very relaxing procedure.
Of course, thanks again to technology, there are several forms of sound healing available for free download on the Internet. Many of them claim take the listener on a journey through all the brain waves; beta, alpha, theta and delta.

Best place to buy Tibetan Singing Bowls in Bangkok TH?
I'm planning a trip to Bangkok very soon, and my friend asked me to bring her back a large Tibetan Singing Bowl. You know- those big metal bowls that make a musical note when rubbed with a wooden striker? She's kind of a new-age hippie, and she asked if I could bring her one back.
Now- where in the heck can I find Tibetan Singing Bowls for sale (at a good price nonetheless) In Bangkok? I've been to BKK several times, but I cannot recall ever seeing these things for sale. I suspect they'd be popular, given that they're commonly used in Buddhist practice. If anyone knows, your input is much appreciated. Thank you.
here's a photo of a guy with several:
