Reading English newspapers, magazines, books-both fiction and non-fiction-and listening to the Voice of America and BBC radio tremendously boosted my English language capabilities. I was speaking a lot of English with anyone and everyone who I thought was conversant with the language. A special mention must be made of two books: The King's English by Henry Watson Fowler and Francis George Fowler and Modern English Usage by Henry Watson Fowler; these books were a great influence in my formative years. Though I did not and could not read not much of these books, and understood even less, but I learnt a lot.
My vocabulary was building up with a rapid clip; the cup of my mind was overflowing with new words-so to speak.
After reading, speaking and vocabulary building, now it was the turn of writing, for writing increases the power of word retention. I began by writing letters to my friends, and they wrote back with admiration.
In 1982 I wrote the text of an advertising campaign for a friend's brother who was doing a four course in fine arts from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He was asked to create a campaign for Pears Soap and Pond's Cold Cream. While he shot the visuals at Sahastradhara and elsewhere in and around Dehradun, I took care of the copywriting part (it was then that I heard about copywriting for the first time). He was so happy with my work that he asked me to continue writing and thought that I had the potential to become a professional copywriter. (Years later I learnt that his campaign had stood first in the class.)
To begin with writing for mass communication, I wrote a letter to the editor of The Times of India (the largest English daily in India) in 1982. I wrote from dusk to midnight-a mere 100 words. Lo and behold! The letter was published as soon as I had posted it. Then I shot off another letter to Society, a monthly magazine. It was also duly published. I wrote letters to editor of The Sunday Observer, a Sunday newspaper published from the then Bombay (now Mumbai).
Through 80s I had set a goal to write a middle for the Times of India. It was easier said than done. I sent the first article in 1982 itself, but it came back with a rejection slip. I was really heartbroken and crestfallen. I sent the rejected article to other newspapers but it came back from everywhere with or without rejection slip.
