As each new year begins, so do new trends in wedding colors. In 2008, yellow weddings became popular and this trend seems to be continuing right into 2009. And why not? Yellow is a bright, sunny and warm color choice and works well for all seasons.
As a guideline though, pale yellows are a better choice for spring, while a brighter yellow is usually reserved for summer weddings. When it comes to fall and winter, consider darkening that yellow by a few shades and you have a beautiful warm golden hue that's sophisticated and stunning, especially paired with the deep shades of winter colors.
Yellow and gold pair up beautifully with many other popular bridal color selections. Mix it with most shades of brown for an elegant look. Paired with black it is sophisticated and stunning. Other colors yellow/gold work well with are: burgundy, emerald green, teal, blues, varying shades of purple, orange, creams, and white. In fact, I don't think there's really any color that doesn't work well with yellow!
Flowers, Bouquets, and Table Decorations
When it comes to your flower bouquets and arrangements, the variations in colors and floral choices is quite large. Yellow roses, mini daffodils, orchids, tulips, daisies, lilies, carnations, and chrysanthemums are just a few that come to mind. Accent them with a contrasting color or use several different shades of yellow in one bouquet.
Adorn your tables with yellow pillar candles nestled within a circle of golden or white chiffon material for a simple, yet beautiful centerpiece. Or perhaps a tall clear vase with a single yellow rose is more suitable for your wedding style.
Want to add some light fun to your décor? Fill clear large vases with sliced lemons pressed along the glass, fill with water and set a small, lovely flower bouquet on top. Better yet - just fill large glass vases with lemons!
Theme Ideas For Yellow Weddings
Many couples choose to incorporate a theme along with their wedding colors. Some suggested theme ideas are:
Bumble Bee Wedding Theme - Your colors will be black and yellow, preferably used in a striped pattern. Place black vases with yellow roses as table centerpieces and use yellow napkins with a black napkin ring for emphasis at each place setting. Present your guests with mini refrigerator bumble bee magnets or small favor boxes stamped with a bumble bee on top. Fill with almonds or mints. Another cute favor is a small bee-hive shaped ceramic honey pot with dipper.
Sunflower Wedding Theme - Use the actual flower as your theme. This sunny, summertime flower is a perfect choice and is easily paired with the color brown. Make or buy sunflower pot pens as favors (this is a pen that's been wrapped in green floral tape and a silk sunflower is attached to the top. Insert the pen into a small clay pot that contains floral foam).
Yellow Butterflies - Go with yellow and white flowers and insert yellow butterfly picks, so that your butterflies are "fluttering" around the flowers. You can also purchase nylon butterflies with sparkling beads and place them about the room - on walls, along table skirts, and nestled around the food table. Decorate white favor boxes with a small paper butterfly and fill with an assortment of yellow and white candies.
Golden Stars - Paired with black or midnight blue, this color combination would be stunning. Add a backdrop behind the head table of blue satiny material and adorn with golden twinkle lights. Cover floral foam blocks in blue and insert star picks at varying heights for a simple table decoration. Give your guests star-shaped cookie cutters as favors.
The above are just some theme ideas that work very well with yellow weddings. You could also plan your wedding around: baby chicks, yellow ducks, any type of yellow flower, the sun, even yellow canaries! When it comes to your yellow or golden wedding theme, let your imagination soar.

Peonies 'Krinkled White' and 'Vivid Rose'
Add Old-Fashioned Beauty to Your Garden
Peonies have an old-fashioned beauty and longevity that have made them a perennial favorite of gardeners. Before being introduced in North America, they were grown thousands of years ago in gardens across the world. There is evidence that Peonies were used for medicinal purposes in Europe over 2000 years ago and that during the reign of Emperor Yang (605-617) in China they were grown as ornamental plants. Peonies were introduced in North America during the 1830's and their popularity has only increased since then. This week we are featuring two of our favorite Peonies - 'Krinkled White' and 'Vivid Rose.'
'Krinkled White'
'Krinkled White' is a simple and classic Peony - large single, snow white petals around a pillow of rich golden stamens and green pistils. 'Krinkled White' is a nice contrast to the more common double flowering varieties. The ruffled-edge, crepe paper-like petals form a bowl shape that can reach 5 to 7 inches across. The stems are straight and strong and do not flop in the garden. 'Krinkled White' is ideal for a cut floral display. Easy-to-grow and a prolific bloomer.
'Vivid Rose'
'Vivid Rose' has large, fully double, brilliant pink blooms that actually glow in the garden! Introduced in 1952 by the renowned Klehm family, it remains a favorite of gardeners not only for its beautiful blooms, but for its delightful sweet scent. The blooms can reach up to 6 to 8 inches across. As with 'Krinkled White', 'Vivid Rose' also has stiff stems with disease-resistant, crinkled foliage that remains deep green right into autumn.
Planting and Care
Both 'Krinkled White' and 'Vivid Rose' are extremely hardy and once established, are one of the longest lived perennials available - lasting for over 50 years! Expect them to reach about 30 inches high, with the stunning display of blooms in the spring. The foliage forms a nice round clump - making the Peonies look more like shrubs than perennials. When cut in the almost-open bud stage, they open in water and last about a week indoors. Do not cut any flowers the first or second year. Be sure to cut faded flowers to prevent seed formation.
Early to mid fall is the best time to plant Peonies as it allows time for their roots to become established. Your peony will spend its first year getting established and will not be floriferous.
- Prefers an area with full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Good drainage is essential. Alkaline soil is a preference but is not essential.
- Mix lots of compost, such as Chesapeake Blue, into the soil at planting. Fertilize with Bulb-Tone in early spring. When planting, do not put fertilizer directly on the plant roots but into the soil away from the roots. Peonies should be lightly fertilized again after blooming.
- Plant with the "eyes" exactly 1 1/2 inches below the soil level. Water well right after planting.
- Mulch with 2 inches of shredded hardwood mulch after the ground has frozen. Remove the mulch in the early spring.
- Hardy in zones 3-8.

Accessories for black and white dress?
I'm going to an afternoon wedding/evening reception. My dress is black and white satin, the print is larger and floral-like.
I want to wear solid shoes but black is boring. I'd REALLY like teal but am having trouble finding them. What other colors would look good? Red? Royal Blue?
Any advice on accessories?
