Introduction on Chinese Facial Make-up
The creation of Chinese Facial Make-up which needs to paint the graphics on people's face directly has a long history. It originated from the mask that is different from Facial Make-up and should paint the patterns on the surface of other goods, and then wear on face. In ancient China, there are two kinds of dance for exorcising evils, and the dancers often take masks. Some unearthed cultural relics in
"Sanxingdui" of SiShuan province included dozens of bronze masks which are supplied for sacrifice more than 4,000 years ago.
Ancient masks have simple signs, "the concept of symbols" and "the emotion of symbols" witch used to express particular ideas and motions.
But when refer to opera, these signs are painted to faces directly and express more complex ideas and motions. From the Tang Dynasty, it had been recorded, but since Yuan Dynasty, Facial Make-up has a big breakthrough from white background with black lines, the "full face" type came out.
We see the Facial Make-up now that have developed more, and each role has its own special character. The colors most based on the description of literature or the actors' imagination. These could not only stand out the characters, facial features and the status of people they act, but also enrich and make beautiful effect of the stage. However, the variety colors have different meanings in opera.
Red usually represents loyalty and upright people, such as GuanYu who is one of roles in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. What's more, red also has some ironic meanings and means pretending good man, but actually not.
Black usually is not only the performance of strictly and stern characters, such as Bao Zheng, but also the symbol of powerful, bold and rude man, like Zhang Fei in The Romance of Three Kingdoms and Li Kui in The Water Margin. Sometimes it means Yin and represents ghosts.
White often performs a suspicious and treacherous character, like CaoCao in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Blue features upright, unruly and outspoken characters, such as Mawu in Shangtiantai.
Yellow is general a performance of bold and violent character.
Gold usually used for the Buddha or fairy people, like Erlang who has three eyes fairy in heavy.

Whats the name of this Chinese Historical Drama? between 1998-2003?
So when I was young I watched this one Chinese Historical drama, but i never got to finish the drama and I really want to see it again.
I believe the drama is between 1998-2003.
Its about a Ice/Snow princess who is very beautiful that she often wears a blue mask to hide her beauty. She lives in somewhat of an ice kingdom.
Then there's the main lead actor, hes a warrior of some sort and comes to the ice kingdom to get a sword to save his kingdom (fire). But when he gets the sword from the ice princess, her kingdom melts. So now she just follows the guy around in the mainland. They kind of fall in love.
so thats all i remember, if anyone could help me find the name of this drama, it would be totally awesome =].
Thanks!!
It's called 蜀山剑侠. I think it's called Zu Mountain Warriors in English. Not sure which version you watched but from the years you mentioned I think you seen the version with Steve Ma as the lead actor.
